My inquiring mind wants to know
My wife teases me about being a wuss at times. I hate pain. That is why she has tatoos and I don't. Anyway, when I had my surgery, the pain pump fell out about 8 hours after I woke up. And I did not realize it. Take it from there. I had no real problems to speak of. I still have a little discomfort when I eat, but I will take that over being 360 pounds and not knowing how much longer I will be around for my grandkids.
GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!
Jt's been a year and a few months since I had my surgery so my memory is probably not as clear but I do know that I left surgery with a morphine pump but I didn't use it even once. I was afraid that the morphine would make me sick, so I had decided beforehand to only use it if I was having severe pain. I also had a prescription filled with liquid pain reliever which I did not use after I got home. I think it is still in the cupboard unopened. I'm not saying that it was all a breeze- I did have some pain and the gas was uncomfortable. I also felt kind of "in shock" bodywise. About three weeks after my surgery I spent a few days in San Francisco and I was somewhat weak still, but I walked quite a bit on hills there. And within a few months I was vacationing in Mexico with no ill effects whatsoever.

Hi Jan,
My RNY was exactly one week before I turned 58. I've had two C-sections, an incisional hernia repair and two total knee replacements. The left knee was off the charts, it was right next dying because of the pain. The right knee, not so bad. The hernia, so-so and the C-sections, like you said, were when I was young.
My pain with the RNY was the gas they blow into your belly before surgery. I was in agony in the recovery room. They ended up calling the doctor for approval to give me something stronger.
I used the self-serve morphine in my room, but it didn't seem to help much with the gas pain, and really, I didn't need it.
Although my stomach was tender, I never used the liquid pain reliever when I got home.
The WORST thing for me was that dam* drainage tube. It was so uncomfortable that I wanted to yank it out myself. Once removed and the cavernous hole started to heal, I felt better. Since I live alone I had a heck of a time trying to put the girdle around me, so in futility, I gave up on it. It seemed to help, at least in the hospital, although it restricted movement.
I don't recall having any pain with bending or stooping or any sort of movement like that once the swelling went down. Flexibility wasn't painful once the the swelling and gas dissipated.
One bit of advise, they take out one drainage tube while you're in the hospital. Be sure to take a deep breath when he pulls. I swear to you-know-who there must have been 20 feet of tube that he pulled out. The tube removed in the dr office wasn't as bad.
Recovery is fairly quick, the more you move after surgery, the better you will feel. You will do just fine.
peace out, elaine
on to your destination.
