Medical ID bracelet questions.....

Aloha my friends.....

I am in the process of getting a medical ID bracelet and now am wondering what should be put on it. It is my understanding that we should NOT be intubated, but rather the ER people should do endoscopic procedure. I have read that and don't know what it means. I need someone who knows something about this who can educate us. I'm surprised this didn't come up in the year's WLS prep that we had at Kaiser, or maybe it did and I wasn't paying attention.

Also, do you know what should be put on medical ID bracelet? This is all coming up for me because I've had a couple of friends recently who became unconscious and were rushed to the hospital and it got me thinking what if that were to happen to me, or any of us in here. How would the EMT crew know that our bodies have been replumbed.

Any words of wisdom on this whole subject would be greatly appreciated. Do any of you have medical ID jewelry, and if so, what does it say?

Thanks as always for being my "soft place to fall" and my place to turn for information about things no one else in my life would understand.

Aloha nui loa,

hi karen- rae ann asked this the other day- i need to find my bracelet - she wanted to know where to get one- i think mine is from medicalert-i bought it online and it has a twistoflex type band- i love it--i paid maybe $30 for it but it was worth it--i do not wear it everyday-probly should- always wear it when travelling....

many folk got theirs from laurens hope but it used to be hers were only cutseys --i don't know currently what she sells

it is warned NOT to get a cutsey beaded one -EMT's don't have time to look- they need to know fast!

pharmacies have "pick up brochures" about all sorts- i looked online - i love to shop that way!

mine says "Gastric Bypass RNY, NO NSAIDS,No BLind NG Tube"

i have no known allergies or anything so not needed- mine opens up to reveal a small paper which has more info- emergency contact etc

the NG tube is usually just shoved in and it could rupture our tiny pouches hence the question  you had....

hope this helps

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Aloha and thanks, Margo! Yes, you did answer some of my questions. I found a place in eBay that sells stainless steel bracelets for only $15.00 and engraves for free. I forgot about the NSAIDS......I'm writing down all the tips I get before ordering.

I never even thought about the rupturing our pouches.....that could for sure be very serious. I wonder how often that has happened. Also, the allergies could be serious business. I am allergic to demerol and sulfa......and need to have that on any ID bracelet I get.

Thanks again for your help!!

Karen....I got mine right here on OH from Crystal. Her Etsy link --->www.etsy.com/view_listing.php  The one she made for me is the first one at the top. I love it!

We have several friends who are EMT's and when I asked them about the beaded bracelets they said as long as the ID plate had the Meduic Alert symbol on it they would see it, they check all types of bracelets knowing there are dozens of variations and it only takes a few seconds for one of them to check. So with the approval of my local EMT's, I feel safe in wearing this beautiful bracelet.

Aloha Dee......Wow, thanks for this information. Very interesting site which I will bookmark or future reference.

I had been warned against the beaded bracelets because they could be easily overlooked, but there are now so many of them out there that I would bet that EMTs now check anything on a person's wrist that looks like it might be a medical ID bracelet.

I'm curious what you had put on yours that was WLS related.

I'm still pre-op so I had Crystal put Pennicillin Allergy and Type 2 Diabetes on this one, I need to be wearing one for those things anyway. As soon as I have my surgery I'll have her make me a new one with Gastric RNY Bypass, No NSAIDS, No Blind NG tube. I think that's what has been recommended.

Aloha Deedles (I LOVE that name!)

You are doing so great!! Thanks for responding and after your surgery I am pretty sure you won't need to have Type 2 Diabetes on your tag. I have so many friends who are completely free of diabetes after their surgery.

I will have exactly what you said put on my tag.......with the addition of the two things I'm allergic to.....demerol and sulfa.

Thanks so much!

Hi Karen.  My bracelet says:  Gastric Bypass RNY, No blind NG tube, No NSAIDS, Latex allergy, contact lenses, diabetic.   This does not tell the whole story, but gets you through an emergency.  If  you use Medic Alert, they also have a toll free phone number and ID number on the tag that a doctor can call and get more indepth info...like your Primary Care doctor's name and number and any medications you are on and the dose, it is an entire profile that you fill out and keep updated on the computer and they keep on record.  They also have a separate travel insurance that you can get so that your info can be accessed worldwide...which I bought when I went to Greece.  I got mine in stainless steel, so it wouldn't turn black (silver does this on me) when I am in a chlorine pool.  Take care.  Diane

ALoha Diana......Excellent info...thank you so much. I may just rethink my eBay choice and go to Medic Alert. Seems like it would be good to have some information in a system that medics could access.

Your input is so appreciated!
