I'm sorry but I know nothing about NSAIDS being prohibited for RNY patient.  Can someone fill me in on this?  The NSAIDS are like Aleve and what else?  Aspirin?

Aloha Barbara.......I have a list of medications that are No-No's......at least for the first year or so. I don't know when, if ever, some of them are allowed back into our diet. I know that NSAIDS are not supposed to be used ever. Some of the other NO-NO's are:

Aspirin: Bufferin, Bayer, Arthritis Pain, etc.
Cold Combinations: Alka Seltzer Plus Cold, Sine-off sinus tablets
Aspirin-like meds: Advil, Aleve, Motrin, Ibuprofen, Naproxen
Rx anticoagulants: Coumadin, Ticlid, Plavix,Aggenox, Dipyridamole
Pain Relief combo drugs: Anacin, Alka-Seltzer, PAC tabs, Cope, Exedrine, Midol, Momentum, Vanquish
Antidiarrheal: Pepto-Bismol
Prescription Meds: Motrin, Naprosyn, Diclofenac, Feldene, Indocin, Lodine,Volaren, Celebrex, Vioxx

I try and stick pretty close to the recommended meds, whi*****lude tylenol products, etc. Your surgeon should have a list for you. I really need to bring this up with my surgeon when I see him or my 3 year in July.

Thanks for the excellent question, Barbara. I will love hearing what others say.

Aloha Judy......I don't know for sure why we can't take pepto bismol, but it is on the list of No-no's. I accidentlly took some once when I had a terrific upset stomach, and oh man....I was sick for hours!! It did NOT go down good....and I had to get it all back up before I felt human again.

Check with your doc, though. They all seem to have different criterial for what's tolerated in our pouches and what's not.

Aloha nui loa,

NSAIDS are medications usually given for arthritis and that also includes Aleve, Asprin, etc....I wonder why your surgeon didn't tell you not to take anything except Tylenol??  NSaids are extremely hard on one's stomach and would be awful for our tiny pouches.

Thanks for the information. I haven't heard a thing about any of this. I take Plavix daily and my cardiologist recently told me if I can't afford the Plavix to take an aspirin every day.  I also take Mobic for arthritis.  I have my two year followup exam in two weeks. I'll be sure to ask about this.

Aloha Barbara......Amazing how much information we DON'T get, huh! I had almost a year of classes before surgery, and got so much information and a GREAT binder with charts, etc. But, still I hear things that I either forgot or didn't know originally that I'm needing to know.....like.....no intubation, etc.

Good luck on finding out more to help you stay healthy.

Karen, I have a necklace.  Mine says:  RNY Gastric Bypass 7/04.  No blind NG Tube.  No NSAIDS, No Aspirin.  No large tablets or capsules.  See wallet for meds.  Allergic to sulfa.

In my wallet, I carry a list of all of the medications and supplements I take -- including dosage and when taken.

I have been thinking about getting one of those that has a watertight compartment to put medical information in.

The information I put on there was determined by my surgeon's recommendations.

Good luck with your decision.

Aloha Cindy (my Oregon sister),

Thanks for the concise info that I needed. Good idea about also carrying info in your wallet. I never thought about that. Right now if I were to collapse, the EMT's would have no idea about my WLS issues. I'm going to be ON THIS til I get something that will keep me from getting into trouble AFTER I'm already in trouble.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen
