What's New Thursday?

Greetings From Oregon:

Hi, all.  Hope you each had a good day today (Wednesday).  It's 9:30 a.m. PST Wednesday evening.  We've been watching some of Americal Idol and some Criminal Minds.

Speaking of TV, how many of you are Apprentice fans?  Who do you think will win the final task -- Joan Rivers or Annie Duke?  It's been an interesting show this go around.

It's rained very hard here this a.m. and the winds were pretty gusty.  Nothing like the winter storms we get -- but still not weather you want to be out in.  Especially driving over the bridge.  When the "high winds"  warning lights are flashing on either side of the bridge I'm scared to drive it.  We've lived on the coast since January '03 and they've only had to close the bridge twice due to high winds.  Both those times, I thought the roof might come off the house.

What are your plans for Mother's Day on Sunday?  We'll be spending some time with our moms.

So, tell us what's new with you?

Hi Cindy and my OFF family:

We had some rain too, but not real hard. If it rains really hard here again for a couple of days, we'll be in trouble -- the Grand River is really high.

Not much happening here. I went to check on my payroll deposit but it's not here yet. Later, I have errands/grocery shopping to do.

Mother's Day? I would've gone to Chicago, but my brother Ed and his wife are taking my mom and his mother-in-law to see her son and his wife and their new baby on Sunday. It's a ways from my mom's, so there's no sense in me going down on Sunday (and I have to work Saturday. So I sent a card. No money for a gift, so I sent some photos of her great-grandchildren that I took at their birthday parties a couple of weeks ago. She'll understand. Maybe I can get her something later (I did bid on some books for her at the Press book sale). She's hard to buy for otherwise (sugar-free candy ... got her that at Easter and she told me I shouldn't have; plants that she kills; books, which I usually get cheap; gift cards, but she only goes to a couple of restaurants). So anyway, I'll call her on Sunday morning, see her in June for her birthday.

Time for bed. Have a good day.

Hi, Eileen:

I so understand about having to use caution/self-discipline when it comes to buying gifts. All of our family birthdays are September-December (except for Ron's and mine which are in February). In addition to that, our kids' wedding anniversary is in October. It's rough trying to get and ship gifts. I always intend to save $$ ahead of time but something always comes up and it never happens.

Heck, the Mother's Day cards we got for our two mom's and our daughter-in-law and her sister cost $18.00 at the store. Afterwards, I berated myself for not checking the Dollar Tree to see what they might have had.

Your mom will be happy to know that she's thought of and will be looking forward to seeing you on her birthday.

When our mom's were far away from us, we'd always send cards and call and they enjoyed that. Now, they're both right here in town so we're more involved.

I appreciate your honest posts, Eileen. I always look for your entries on OFF.

Hope your check hits your bank account so you can do your Thursday errands.

Cindy/Karen:

I never spend much on gifts anyway; I keep it under $20 (sometimes a little more on the kids, but I get a lot at the Press book sale for real cheap). I was just going to get mom a $20 Culver's card because I know she likes Culver's (frozen custard/fast-food burger chain). Oh well, like I said, she'll understand.

On a really good note, Topamax is now generic and instead of
costing $80 copay it was under $10. I was so excited. I had to
tell the woman at Walgreens to change it generic, though. She
was trying to charge me the $80 for the regular, and my prescription plan says to use generic whenever it's available.

Yes, my check was there this morning. Sometimes it comes in
earlier, though.

Eileen, As my mom got older and older it was so hard to find any "thing" for you. She didn't need or want anything. If I did buy her something to wear or use she would "save" it in a drawer for later. New nightgowns, new towels went unused with her saving them for "later." Since she has passed away I try to remember that and use and enjoy gifts given.

One of my mom's most treasured birthday "gifts" was a letter that I wrote to her for her 90th birthday. She shared it with friends and I found it among her papers after she passed away. I could tell it had been read several times. Your card, pictures and call will make her day.

On one of my friend's mom's 90th she requested that we each do an "act of kindness" and then write and tell her mom what we did. That was so much fun. Her mom got lots of cards and we all had the pleasure of doing a good dead (oops! Make that deed. I don't think there is a good "dead!") Oh my, when I do a typo I really do a good one. Thought I'd leave that one for you all to enjoy.

I do watch that show sometimes, although I'm behind now that
baseball season is here. Good for the Rangers. They sure
kicked the Sox' butt last weekend.

The Sox aren't doing so good ... Ozzie needs to kick some butt.

Morning Cindy,

I've been so exhausted lately from my busy schedule that I was looking forward to sleeping in this morning.  The hotel bed was so comfortable, but I woke up before the alarm and actually earlier than I do at home.

I really wanted to go out and see some of the Washington sights last night, but really wasn't in the mood so I just sat here cleaning up my emails.  When I come next month, I'm flying here in the morning for an afternoon meeting and then back home the same day, so no sightseeing then either.  This will be a monthly trip until at least November, so maybe another time.  It was exciting seeing the Pentagon, the White House, and the Washington Memorial as the plane prepared to land.

Talked to Brenda last night and there was a problem with the kitchen yesterday.  There was an electrical outlet in the spot where the appliance garage was going, so she had a friend come over and move the outlet, so things should be alright.  It sure is nice having talented friends.  Wish I had more talent than just administratively.

Well, I guess I'll get packed and prepare for my meeting.  It gets over at noon and I then I'll get to the airport and wait for my 4:30 flight.  Hope everyone has a nice day.
