I had a total hysterectomy when I was 27 and I'm 52 now, so I've been menopausal for quite some time.  I stopped HRT years ago.  I was a total weight loss resistant person.  I had my RNY a little over 2 weeks ago and I've lost 20 lbs. since surgery.  I've had no complications.

I had the band not RNY but, I did have it after menopause.  I took an antidepressant and they want me to stay on it thru the weight loss journey.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Marian,

I had lap-band surgery not RNY, but I'll give you my 2 cents.  I was post-menopausal when I had my WLS at age 54, taking Premarin (HRT) and Lexapro (for depression).  For years I had thought that menopause and all its joys were making it hard for me to lose weight.  Maybe that's true.  But I didn't have any trouble losing weight after WLS, and 19 mos later, I'm no longer on Premarin and take half my original dose of Lexapro.

Having said that, I will also say that as you lose weight, your fat cells release estrogen, and that can certainly mess with your moods.  It hasn't been a problem for me, though.

Hi Jean
I really appreciate your reply to me.
I am not having lapbad likely RNY but I really needed to hear that you lost weight with the menopause and the lexapro which I am on. I am on prempro and other things. However i don't have the other comorbesities. I am 52 and my BMI is like 42 or so.

I was concerned about the release of hormones from weight loss and how that may affect me, also hair loss and other non lapband issues that can occur, leakage, stricture et al.

I had a lapband it was a bad experience for me, but I had some bad fills from someone really untrained in fills since my doctor was in Mexico 40 hours away. Long story but I had 2 slippages and now the band is out. But I never had a anti band opinion. However I think its better to be near your doctor.

Any thing you would like to share is very welcomed
With appreciation

Hi Marian,

I was 56 when I had my RNY but still having regular periods (had one in the hospital). I continued having fairly regular cycles for about 6 months and then they started becoming more and more irregular. I even went 7 months without one last year. During that time (last summer) I was so miserable with hot flashes and trying black cohash to attempt to control the hot flashes until finally last fall I begged my PCP for hormones. Taking hormones started me having regular cycles again (4 months****il I told doctor that I was having cycles again after starting the meds. He dropped my dosage and I'm taking a lower dose of hormones (estrogen and progestron) and the hot falshes are gone as well as the bleeding. So I think I have it under control.

My weight loss was very rapid and I lost over 100 lbs. in 8 months. I'm now below my original target weight (137 at 5'8") and feeling great wearing a size 6! I haven't had any trouble with depression and actually the opposite, feeling more euphoria having gone through so much in such a short time (4 surgeries). WLS gave me back my life and I'm eternally grateful.

I did ... I had RNY at age 54. I hadn't had a period in MONTHS and the nurse said "Trust me ... you will have a period after RNY" ... I told her I didn't think so. HA! A month later I had a period from heck!!! But haven't had one since (11 months now) ... YAY! I am down over 150 pounds since January 1, 2008. My RNY was 5/13/2008.
