Linda,

I've never watched American Idol, but I hear about it a lot.  My beauty parlor in this small Southern town is a hotbed of gossip, but they'd rather debate about American Idol contestants than discuss who's pregnant, who's in rehab, who's fooling around, etc.

Speaking of small Southern towns.  Yesterday I was reminded of yet another thing I like about the South.  My car's battery died when I was in town yesterday, and THREE people stopped to help me.  When I first moved here, I drove my car into a ditch at the side of the road (long story) way out in the country and thought, "I'm sunk!" but three people stopped to help me and one of them phoned a fourth person to bring a truck to tow me out.  When I lived in the Northeast, not a single person ever stopped to help me when I was stuck on the side of the road (yes, I know people are afraid that a stranded motorist could be an axe murderer, but how threatening can a short fat woman be?).  After I'd lived here 3 months, I dropped my AAA membership.  Who needs AAA when you have nice neighbors?

B: coffee protein shake
S: iced skinny latte
L: chicken, orange & grapefruit salad
S: cheese
D: shrimp with spinach and feta
S: fresh strawberries with light sour cream and Splenda brown sugar (yum!)

Jean, the bulk of my family still live in the South Carolina's,lots of them who moved to the north returned to the south, and some of them fill up an entire section, with a street named after them. I know what you mean about the south.
When that crazy woman,Susan Smith drove her kids into the lake and said a Black man did it,it was in the town of Union where my family lives. One of the reasons no one was buying it is because of the humanity found there. It is a tight knit town who have known each other for generations and are way pass racial strife.
She could have knocked on any door, and those kids would have been taken and cared for.
Huggers, have a good day, thanks for reminding me of what I too like about the South.

That sounds like our town, though we don't have a Susan Smith (that I know of), thank God.

Most of the teachers in our school system are white (the principal of the middle school is black), but according to my fellow church members, all the teachers pay out of their own pockets to give their poor students (black and Hispanic) an afternoon snack on Fridays because otherwise those kids wouldn't eat again until they return to school on Monday.

Lots of people were kind to me when I was a newcomer (I arrived here a few months before my husband was able to join me, but I especially remember a black coworker who sat and chatted with me in the lunchroom, introduced me to new people, brought her sister and some of her kids to visit me where I was living at the Super 8 motel (I wouldn't recommend the Super 8 as a dwelling), gave me a whole bottle of her husband's hydrocodone when I had a tooth abcess (OK, drugs might be a sensitive subject for some, but that was a lifesaver until I could find a dentist), and baked us a lemon meringue pie when we finally moved into our house.

I know several people here who live on a street named after their family.

It's a different world here.  I don't miss the Northeast one bit.

Smile, the first 6 years of my life were spent on my grandma's farm in the Carolinas.she had a lake in her back yard! It was the best time of my entire childhood.
I am luckier than most, there was always food, and grandma bartered eggs and old fashioned churned butter to the town folk, she also killed and smoked her meats and the chickens were something we knew not to make pets of,as they might be Sunday dinner.
I remember shucking corn, and plucking chickens, eating tomatoes warm off the vine, busting watermelons and eating the "hearts" of it.
Every summer was spent there. My friend at my 30 year reunion said he always thought the Black kids went to camp the whole summer...LOL.
My mom and her siblings were all Mulatto, and I remember my White grand dad, although it was ilegal for them to marry,he was "around".
My grandma was full of love and took in many "strays" who became cousins.
My late uncle,Gilliam, was a war hero, and the first Black deputy in that town,of course he was so light you had to know his color...a compromise I guess...smile.
Although I would not live in the south,or any other humid place,I will never forget the Lazy Susans, the orchards in grandma's yard, shelling peas and the rest of a lovely time in my life.
