Cold vs. Hot

Every time I read a post that mentions being cold I wonder...Is that so bad???  Isn't it much easier to get warm than to be hot and try to cool off?  I'm mostly warm all the time, a sweat hog really.  I hate summers because of it.  After surgery will I be joining you people that are always cold now?  Will I be able to get warm?  That will really be weird for me to complain about being cold.  That's why I live in Michigan.  I love winter.  I don't really have a winter jacket at all.  I mostly just wear a hoodie or a fleece jacket.  That's enough for me.  I'm beginning to think that I'll have to break down and buy a winter jacket this fall.  And if this is the case that I'll become a cold person, why does this happen?  Just because I won't have the fat to keep me warm?

I sort of hope it's true. Living near Houston I stay overheated 9-10 months of the year! I haven't had a winter coat in over 40 years, a sweatshirt made into a jacket is sufficient on the coldest days. Shorts are worn year 'round. When I was first diagnosed with thyroid problems and the Dr. was trying to get my meds correct, I had a brief episode of be chilly. I was wonderful! But I also got a chance to see the other side. I always thought it would be easier to be cold natured, I mean...there's only so many clothes you can do without and cold people could just put on more clothes to stay warm. Not so in my experience. The cold seemed to come from the inside and only heat from a heat source really helped.

So I'm really hoping to be somewhere in the middle!

Hi Jan,

I think we get cold because we lose our insulation. There's probably a more correct biological reason, but I'm going with the insulation theory because I like it.

I live in MI, too, and have worn a fleece jacket for the last 10 years. But when I get hot, I get hot. I overheat.  Perhaps that will change when I get closer to my goal weight.  Wouldn't it be nice not to have the AC kicked down really low this summer??

All you need is the plan, the road map, and the courage to press
on to your destination.

Jan,
I was never, ever cold before WLS. There was an extra 207 pounds of insulation. Now it takes a volcano and blast furnace to keep me warm.

The nice part of being cold is that nobody can see that I am cold. Before, the sweat was always running down my face, neck, chest and dripping off my shirt. Cold is way better and much neater.

kisses

Yup - here at the surgeons seminar they said "go buy a winter coat - you WILL get cold" and referenced people just wearing sweatshirts, etc.

I've always been cold - so I'm still cold - lol.  Maybe that's why this spring is bothering me so much and it doesn't feel like its warmed up???? hmmmmm

Well - think of it this way - you won't be so HOT in the summer...  and yes, you'll be able to warm up - just wear more clothes....

Cool.  not being hot in the summer will be the best!  I can't imagine being cold, but it's another new experience I've got to look forward to after WLS

Jani,
Yep, I used to be so dang hot that I couldn't wear my cute Christmas sweaters to work. I was ALWAYS HOT! Now, I'm cold a lot. But before I had the chance to really enjoy not being so dang HOT, menopause kicked in and I was hotter than EVER. Can you say "hey, no fair!" Well, I did. Those hot flashes were coming almost every 15 minutes for about 6 months and I was Pissed (pardon my french) Sometimes I had relief for an hour or so...but the hot flashes were so bad that they actually hurt. Anyway the good news, knock on wood, is that about 3 weeks ago, they just stopped. I hope they don't come back but I won't be surprised if they do.
But, yep, I am loving the hot weather as I can be normal hot instead of fat and miserable hot!
Good luck, you will love it!

Cheryl

I too was always hot..... now I have experienced the cold.  There were times I was so cold I would throw my bathrobe in the dryer to heat it up.  Then I would crawl under my feather comforter to sleep.  OMG  I never felt such bone chilling cold.   Yesterday was a warm day for us and I was actually uncomfortable with the heat but not the dripping wet sweaty.  I can wear long sleeve turtlenecks with a long sleeve shirt over it..... THEN put on a coat.  LOL   it's a family joke now.

Hey Jani!

If you get to cold this winter you could always hope a plane to FL and take a cruise to the Caribbeans.  That is my favorite thing to do when I get tired of the cold MI winters.  ( I have lost weight in the past and felt the cold)  I have a sister retired to Tampa that I HAVE to visit in the winter.

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

Sounds good to me.  I do have a SIL and BIL that have a place in FL.  They live in Muskegon and my MIL is in a home for Alzheimer patients there, so my SIL hasn't been going to FL the past two winters.  She stays here to watch over Mom and make sure she's getting the proper care at the facility.  Maybe she'll go down this winter for a week or two and I can join her.  I do have to admit that when I was in the process of losing weight in the past I felt the cold, but of course, it didn't last long...you know, back on plus more...
