HOW MANY CALORIES?????

I gotta know,I was discussing daily caloric intake. My friend quoted me an intake that my NUT would consider starvation mode. My friend had her operation years ago,so I ponder if our basic RNY differ, this is the only reason that I mention it was older, like 7 years. I have a few old timers remark on some basics.
So please do not be shy,and hopefully we will all behave in a adult manner. I truly think these answers will help so many of us.

Morning Linda,

I went to a NUT to have what is called a MedGem test done to determine my daily caloric needs based on my metobolic rate. They find your resting metobolic rate, then add what you need in accordance to your activity level, and that gives you the calories you need to maintain your weight.
Based on my weight (125) I need 1400 cals a day to maintain. From that, she broke it down further to be:

47 grams of fat

175 grams of carbs

70 grams of protein

I skew that a bit, adding more protein and reducing the carbs a bit, and it's been working well. Well, except that I"ve gained 3 lbs that I can only attribute to some of my old sins returning to haunt me. Gotta get rid of those demons!!!

Susan

Whew!! Thank you Susan that is much more in line with my NUT.
I know we basically do not count calories as a way of life, but then,of course we do! Smile....techinically there is a formula that we follow the rest of our lives. Some people think carbs are a 4 letter word even the  yellow and red ones. She says I must have those, much of the green ones espcially,I mostly stay on the low carb fruits, but do not worry if I have a high one,it balances out.It becomes second nature, huh?
Girl, those ain't demons you are fighting, they are carb breathing dragons!! They must be slain, again and again. "Some days you are the windshield, other days you are the bug"
  Have a good one!

Hi Linda!

Our Doctor tells us to stay on  a 1200 calorie plan.

Hope this helps.   I don't post often but thought this might be a helpful topic.

Thanks!

linda..good topic!!! i can't remember -my notebook from my doc/nut is at home-and of course, i am not!since i never reached goal i have pretty much dropped alot of the rules-tho i try to be as compliant as i am able...someday i'll get down towards goal!!! i stress eat and still find my stress levels too high tho i am holding well on this trip.....

anyhow- it seems to me that about 1200 was what they suggested--these folks who eat so much less are actually starving their bodies...

i would love to check out the procedure susan did someday....man, my someday list is getting longer!!!!!!

Okay, not too sure I want anyone to run with this info but I got it from my food values paperback that I keep handy for recording calories, protein and fiber.  That book says to take your goal weight and multiply it by 100 for the number of calories required to achieve that goal.  I recognize that this is a very basic formula and we must take into consideration how many calories come from protein, carbs and fiber, but it is a good basic formula that I've been using.

Grand Health Partners (formerly MMPC/Mich. Wt. Loss Specialties) recommends for RNYers:  1,000 - 1,200 calories, 30 gm. or less of fat, and 60-80 gm. of protein.   They do not have a recommendation on carbs, but hey, we all know we need to keep them low.   I only track protein, fat, and calories - mainly my only carbs come from fruit and veggies, and once in a while a few whole wheat crackers.
