When People Bully the Obese.
Jeannie, Your post makes me sad. I too have endured these rude stares and comments. Beyond rude. So totally invasive and cruel. One time on a plane I could hear the rude comments of two young, professional women in front of me so "happy" that they didn't have to sit next to me. I didn't need to eavesdrop. Their comments and gestures gave me the full context of their conversation. I leaned forward and said "I'm obese not deaf!" One at least blushed and shut up. No apology but then someone like that doesn't even realize how cruel and wrong their behavior is.
You know I'm not a religious person but I hope that your continued support of your friend and the example you set living your life will encourage her to change her life. She is killing herself "softly" as the song goes. Not so softly really. Food is the only thing she "thinks" she has control over. I so remember that thought too. In reality it was the last thing in the world that I had any control over. It's so true that people wouldn't dream of saying something to someone who is bald because of chemo or crippled or missing arms or legs, but they don't even hesitate to stare or say things to the obese. Life is hard enough as it is without the added intrusions from adults who should know better.
Keep being her friend. I know you will. She needs you more than you probably even know.
