final days of my 'old life'

I am down to my last 3 days in this body. On Wednesday I will go to Cleveland Clinic and Dr Chand will 'fix me up'.
I have a little added complication of having had a previous Nissen Fundiplication which he will have to take down, it has some adhesions in the chest that he says should not be a problem. And then he will do the RNY. I will have a drain and because of the take down I will have a G-tube in the remnant stomach. I don't know how long these will be in.I keep meaning to ask, but get all stupid whenever I see him.
I have a busy day tomorrow with packing (It is 450 miles away and we have to stay in the area for 10 days. And I have been unemployed since March do to pain issues and for some reason my short term disability will not pay. I hope wt loss will help with the job hunt.) I also have to see my primary MD and stuff. I also will do the bowel prep and start the clear liquid diet. Tuesday we hit the road.
I am getting kind of nervous and I am looking for any words of wisdom you have to share. Anything about preop, post op what ever.
My surgeons office said there is no problem with taking vitamin pill and stuff after surgery. Is this true? I a afraid of Calcium pills. I could grind them up and take with applesauce.
I am 52 female who has had surgical menopause.

Hi there!

I too had a Nissen...then had a redo Nissen, then a RNY. I had chronic chest  pain after my 1st Nissen and after the redo (redone because of the pain I had which they thought was caused by adhesions)....After RNY pain was gone for about a month...now I have chest pain again....but no complications from my RNY, Nissen, Nissen redo and Nissen take down.....I had a drain but no G-tube....
My drain was in about 4 days or so...

Best thing I ever did for myself.....I just deal with the pain...had it before the RNY....(my husband thinks they should put plastic wrap between all of my organs and chest wall so I don't get adhesions but the doc didn't like that idea :-)

You take care and we'll make room for you on the loser's bench!

Hi Puff,
I don't have a lot of wisdom, but I do have a good understanding of where you are at right now.  I wish you every good and perfect thing in your journey, and will pray for God to bless your surgery and recovery.

I just bought powdered One-a-Day vitamins for women today.  This is a full multi vitamin in powder form that you add to your water.  No pills to worry about.  That's a good thing!!  Be sure when you buy Calcium you are getting Calcium citrate NOT carbonate.  You will not absorb the carbonate.  Buy a pill crusher.  They are cheap and easy to use.  Crush the calcium and get it down that way.  I purchased Calcium supplements from Bariatric Advantage.  They are chewy chocolate goodies and you chew away.  Mmmm  pretty good tasting, but I doubt you can have them right away.  Be sure you have the things you'll need post-op on hand at home so you are running around last minute.  That would include your supplements, water, if you drink bottled, and a protein drink/shake/supplement so that you get adequate protein everyday.

Blessings to you as you move toward a new and healthy life.

Walking with you on this journey, Mary

i have never heard of the nissen before but i can google it to learn..
wishing you the best for your surgery and the stay in cleveland--will you have a laptop or anything? will someone let us know how you are?

your first week or so out you probl'y won't feel like doing much..sleeping can be an issue for some- recliner chairs are wonderful-will you be in a nice hotel? or pillows propped up against your sides while you sleep on your back (no fun but ya do what ya gotta)

you'll learn to take baby sips and to walk walk walk...depending on your drs regime for foods you may be on clear liquids awhile- soup broth (dollar tree has big boxes of it for $1 instead of little cans!) you can add protein powder to that but usually the drs are more worried about you getting your liquid in and staying hydrated..and being gentle on your new pouch.

oh- you'll want to stay near a bathroom -it may take a few days for a bm then - watch out! not to scare you!

chapstick is vital !!! easy on slippers while in the hospital- and i wore their gowns.

we'll have a spot on the loser's bench for you!

i thought my hysterectomy was worse than my rny so - just me.....

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

The vitamins were my dessert. LOL.  You will feel so much better.  Of course, you will feel weak for a couple of weeks.  Just take it easy and do baby steps.

I had no problem with the surgery and I was taking all my meds in the same form while still in the hospital, even the larger pills.  But you can cut them in half or crush them if you need to. Your doctor will help you decide about  that.

I will tell you, a good recliner is a life saver when it comes to sleeping, especially if you will have tubes. The recliner is like a mini hospital bed and the position is perfect for sleeping on your back.  I was on oxygen for a couple of weeks and the recliner worked out well.

It's scary but exciting too.  It's alway a relief to get it behind you but you will be so glad you did it and will start feeling better almost immediately.

Good luck and let us know how things go for you.

How exciting for you.  I can't imagine being that close to my date.  When you talk about the take down, does that mean he's removing the stitches and releasing it so he can then make the pouch?
I'm still pre-op, but the words of wisdom I've received and burned into my brain are, sip, sip, sip, walk walk walk.  I bought a pill crusher just to be safe and not put anything in my pouch that will plug it up.
Best of luck and blessings to you.
Jan
