WARNING WILL ROBINSON WARNING!!! DO NOT EVER PAY OFF YOUR CAR!!!
Yep. Made the last payment on that sucker Friday morning. What's today? Saturday? Drove it off the lot with 22 miles on it August of 2004; 2005 Altima LS, loaded. Made that damned payment for five years over $500 a month. Love"d" that car.
Took off work yesterday at noon, came home and packed my car for a Great Adventure w/Grammy @ The Embassy Suites in Irving. Great place... free happy hour and free breakfast and two rooms... indoor pool and hot tub.... I digress...
Anyway, picked my 'babies' up and headed for THEIR $4, got a strawberries and cream and double chocolate mint frapps and strict instructions NOT to spill anything in the car because I had just made the last payment, had it serviced ($700), detailed some time ago from the last frapp that spilled in the car ($125) and we set out for the 5 mile trek to the hotel via the freeway as we could check in at 3 p.m. As usual, I missed the Valley View exit.. so I knew I'd have to pass the hotel and then get off at Esters and circle back. Kids were excited as we could see the hotel.
Okay, I'm in the middle lane as the two right lanes are get-offs for the tollway... traffic is stopped. Crap, must be a wreck ahead... but the lanes all around me are moving... two cars in front pull out and the SUV in front of me moves up... I am a safe distance back, check my mirrors... put on my left turn signal and turn my wheels to the left so that if the SUV moves up just a hair, I've got room to exit to the next lane and be on our way. Still having no clue what's in front of me because I can't see. Only know traffic's moving in the 'other' lanes.
I was totally stopped. The SUV was totally stopped. The red 'vehicle' behind me (truck) was totally stopped and had no idea who all was behind him but somewhere in the back of mind mind was "I hope everyone stops"... yeah, right. Eight car pile-up.. Remember I say I had turned my wheels to the left and turned on my turn signal and was a safe distance away from the SUV? Well, when the BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM, BAM.... got to me... it catapulted me out of the lineup and into the freeway and about 100 yards or more down the freeway.. per the skidmarks.... as I looked back in the mirror... trucks and cars were all over the place... Seems the red vehicle corrected to the right... and sent me to the left and someone went under the SUV.. so no one could figure out where we came into play.. but now they understand.
I had a 5 year old in the back seat yelling "GRAMMY!!! I spilled my drink!!!!".. and a 10 year old yelling, "GRAMMY!!!! Call someone!!!".
I had my two precious babies in the car and they were OKAY!!! Since were in the middle of a now shutdown freeway and the temp was HORRIBLE... I just left the a/c on.... could see that the trunk was now almost to the back window...told the kids to unbuckle and get in the front seat with me and let's just hug for awhile.... called their parents and told them we'd been rear-ended but we were okay...and to go to the hotel and we'd be there eventually.... but not to panic when they drove by the accident scene...the four ambulances and all the fire trucks were for OUR wreck but we farther down the freeway. I was cool, calm and collected so while parent's were concerned, they weren't panicked... so they took cell phone pictures as they went by.... while I was sitting there my shaky hand was calling my insurance agent.... he had us a rental car at the hotel in less than an hour and a half!!! (I digressed again)
Eventually, two firemen came and asked if we were in THAT accident and we said yes... I was able to move my car to the side of the freeway... the EMT's came and checked out the kids... and I knew I'd be sore... but my hand was sprained.
Police finally came to us... unloaded my car in their trunk, gathered my babies and put them in the back of the squad car... Kara was a little un-nerved but Tate thought that was pretty cool. But Kara was a trouper. I told her I'd give her a dollar if she didn't cry. Kid will do anything for more shopping money. Asked all the police and fireman to continually check on them and SMILE at them... they did.
When we got to the hotel, we were met by two very anxious parents... the whole trauma was actually that Tate's Spongebob Squarepants rolling duffle bag with this favorite shirt in it was nowhere to be found... and his Simpson Sorry game. He couldn't quit crying about it... but Grammy to the rescue and trying to keep a clear head... called Uncle Mike about 5 p.m. to cancel his plans for the evening, told him what happened and to come to the hotel... and we went to the Irving Auto Pound, got on the golf cart, drove through all the wrecked cars, saw all that were in our wreck... OH MY.. we were LUCKY!!! and there... sitting next to the red pickup... a Spongebob Squarepants rolling dufflebag. Life was again GOOD and Tate thought the auto pound was a neat place with all the wrecked cars.. he wants to go back!!
Uncle Mike took us back to the hotel... we put on our swimsuits... and they swam until 10:20 last night.. got back to the room and did a pay-per-view of the Jonas Brothers Concert... and they fell asleep 5 minutes into it.. those kids aren't half bad.. I watched it all.. and no sleep much for me... I wrecked cars all night long.
Kids slept late this morning.. we cuddled on the couch, went down and had a great breakfast, fed the fish, went back to the room and put on our swimsuits for a two hour swim, left, went to Rita's for Italian Ice's, and took them home.
I went to CareNow for my hand and they are backed up for two hours and since they are less than a mile away from me, they will call when it's about 30 minutes for me to wait and I'll go see about my hand. I have PIP so my insurance will eventually pay for it...
Oh, the car... well... I had gap insurance... they'll pay for anything that's owed.. oops.. well, timing is everything, isn't it??
Not sure what car to buy now.. thinking about a tank.. but looks like I'm continuing to work for car payments again... guess I needed motivation to keep in the workforce.
Well, that's my story and I'm sticking with it. I'll post when I find out what the insurance is going to do and see what kind of wonderful deal I can make on a car... GM, Ford, Chrysler?
Probably another Nissan... 29.8 mpg consistently and it WAS a tank. Had a 100,000 mile warranty with 100,486 miles and 56 miles on a $41 tank of gas and the tags were due in June.
Hugs.

GOD BLESS YOU TODAY
JAN COOK
Dayum Janet!! You are such a trooper! I think I would have imploded!!
You were blessed indeed.
I want to know how everything turns out!
I had to cancel my cleaning lady and am going back to regular nails. I struggle to clean and prevent my urge to throw away dishes!!
I know you are grateful your gands are fine.
If I had to make car payments,I would have to live on the street.
Special hugs!

Oh My Gosh Janet....What a story!! So glad you and the grands were not hurt. One just never knows when an accident is going to happen and they happen so dang fast too. Cannot say that I've ever been in a car accident and hope I never ever will be either. Let us know when you get those new "wheels". Maybe a sporty little convertible. I can just see it now, this gorgeous and sexy red head "tooling" around. Man could you attract the men now. I thought you needed a little humor girl. I'd probably have been a total wreck and all shook up had this happened to me. Where I live, there are no freeways or heavy traffic but there are still plenty of fender benders everywhere you drive and some aren't so lucky as you.
Hugs and glad you are okay,
Sandy

Oh Janet, I'm so very glad you and the kidlets are fine! And you even had enough left in to you think to go to the wrecking yard for the rolling backpack. What troopers you all are.
Now, I think Sandy might be onto something. Convertable, sporty. Man magnet, perhaps???
Hope your hand ends up just being a little ouchie and not a BIG owie.

I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

Janet I am so glad that you and the grands are alright. That had to be scary time for you. I know that I would have been for sure.
You sure are a real trouper to keep them calm and collected during the whole thing and I bet the hugs in the front seat were just what the doctor would have ordered. Those hugs always do a heart good.
I am so glad that things turned out well and I will be keeping you in prayers that your hand is just something simple and short lasting and that things go well with the aftermath of the accident.
Sending you love and gentle hugs......
