Bariatrics class today!
Hi everyone - I had the wls pre-surgery class today in Toronto, which is about 300 kms. away from my home. A friend went with me so that I didn't find the driving so boring - there's a long stretch of highway that is very flat, and I get a bit mesmerized by it when I am driving alone lol. But I digress...
Anyway, I am now beginning to believe that I will actually have the surgery. Just an appointment with the internist, dietitian and social worker (all scheduled on two consecutive days) before I go back to see the surgeon and get the date. It was a good day.
I hope all who went to Nan's have a great time and equally great weather.
Pat R. I hope to see you back on line soon after your successful surgery.
Good wishes go out to everyone who is suffering in any way.
Marilyn - I feel for you having to wait for the results of the medical tests that you had. I don't know if you are spiritual/religious or not, but my former mother-in-law, when she was faced with chaos, trauma, anxiety, etc. was the calmest person that I have ever met. I asked her how it was that she didn't worry, and she told me that she "gave it to God". Her telling me that has helped me to cope with many difficult situations including a diagnosis of breast cancer. I realized that I didn't have the carry the load by myself. Hope this helps.
Have a great weekend, and to my American friends, have a great Fourth of July.

Margaret:
I'm glad you're getting closer to your surgery. I know you've waited a long time. I, too, had to wait a long time ... nearly a year ... before I had surgery. Sounds like you have found a way to deal with waiting. It's what the nuns used to tell us to do ... "Give it up to God." I forget those things sometimes because I'm not overly religious (non-practicing Catholic these days, although somewhat spiritual and definitely not very calm).
It's hard waiting, but you are nearing your goal. Hang in there, it's coming!

Hi Eileen
It's been 13 months now, and I'm ready to start anew.
I'm also a non-practising Catholic, or as John Bradshaw has said, a recovering Catholic (lol) -recovering from the priests and nuns who were nasty to us as children - although I'm thinking about going back to church. I'm not religious, and I would call myself spiritual more than anything; however, when my ex m-in-law told me to "give it to God", I couldn't believe the weight that was taken off my shoulders. Just changing my thinking made all the difference in the world. Who knew that just one comment could change my life so dramatically in the way that it did? I think that I will write her a note and tell her the impact that she had on my life - people don't know unless we tell them, and I know that she will feel good that she changed my life in such a positive way.
Thanks for your comments.

Aloha Margaret....I am happy for you and having flashbacks to the days before my own surgery when I took the steps to get it set into motion. For me, it was almost two years from when my PCP recommended WLS and when I actually had it. The lesson for me (I'm still working on it) was patience.....I'm really really bad at being patient.
Also, I LOVE that you are thinking of sending your former MIL a note to tell her the impact her simple words had on your life. All too seldom do we get to know what kind of difference we have made in someone's life....and that would a gift so very precious.
Good luck with all that is ahead for you!
Aloha nui loa,

Thanks for your comments Karen - you are a very positive influence on this site.
I try to remind myself everyday that my comments to others can make or break their day and can, sometimes, change their lives.
I teach at the college level, and I periodically send email messages to some of my students letting them know that I recognize and appreciate the work that they are putting into their studies. I love doing this because it is unexpected and always appreciated; however, I need to remind myself that I can do so much more to make a positive impact in the lives of my students, family, friends and others whom I come in contact with everyday. It's not always easy, but it is do-able if I work at it.
Margaret
PS I've already written the note to my former mother-in-law.
