I am still researching. I am yelling because I feel we should not have to,that our doctors and nutritionist should have given us this info BEFORE WLS.

Eileen,my neurolgist says I have fibromyalsia. When I went to the pain center,they gave nuerotin to the point of disgust,like 1300 mgs. which my medical doc took me off,they tried me on Lyrica,and in 4 days,I gained 10 pounds and swelled so much I could not move!
My MD treats me with Vicodin as a break through to my morphine,scary as hell,but a very low dose with NO increase,as it scares the hell out  of me,I take med vacations so my system does not become dependent.
For the year I lost most of my weight,I slept in my recliner as I could not lay down. I can not believe I did this for a year,and still mostly worked (God is great)!!
My MD told me not to worry about dependence as I will be on pain meds the rest of my life. My body is riddled with arthritis. Some prognosis,but hey, I am here,and I walk up and down stairs every day.
I wondered if your doctor has a treatment that is different. Thanks for listening.
I take low doses of morphine because I itch,I have an allergy to it,but I live with it,in a guarded fashion. She mentioned something that had the sound of meth,and you would not believe how fast I could get out of her office on a walker!!

I'm on a lower dose of neurontin. I've thought about Lyrica, but my pain doc says it's the same as neurontin but more expensive (and right now I can't do expensive. I've asked my PCP about Cymbalta, and he said that might help my fibro, but it's more expensive. Maybe next year when my finances are better.

I also have arthritis ... back, knees and feet, also in my elbows (just starting). If my elbows go, I'm toast ... I'll have to get disability.

I have vicodin for my knees and back (usually take one at night when I get home from work; sometimes I need an extra one). My chiropractor recommended this stuff called BioFreeze ... it's a rub (actually, a gel). It really works well. It comes in a roll-on, too, or a spray. You can find it in health stores.

So true about the Lyrica,I spent 60.00 and had to throw it away,the same company who makes neurotin made it. I can not use either.
I know what you mean about the elbows.  I am only on medical leave for work.
I bought the long term leave package from my job,so I can go past
the covered time for medical leave. My human resource people will make me apply for SSDI,and they will say no,as 65 percent of my salary is still too high for them to consider me.
I am trying to get well enough  to make it until retirement.
Our government makes it so hard to get help,one could die,or be homeless before they help! I have worked 43 years,I hope I can make it,and I hope you can too.

Thank you for your help.

Hiya Eileen,I have been thinking about some of the things you said. Thank you so much for the BioFreeze tip,I will have to try it when I get money,LOL!
If the Neurontin works for you,I do not see why your doctor would want you to switch,but of course,I am not a doctor.
I felt no difference between it and Lyrica,except the Lyrica made me swell up. Sometimes you can't build a better mouse trap.
Does your doctor have samples you can try? If he does not,sometimes you can contact the company for a discount coupon,or sometimes a free bee.
I notice you are well informed. Do you visit WebMD?It is priceless,not only medical facts,but honest feedback from real people.
I hate feeling like a Guinea pig for modern day drugs,because of the finances,and limited side effect info on a new drug,I have told my doctor to give me the old tried and true. If someone has used a specific med for 15 years,and they have not grown gills,extra boobage,or developed anal leakage,that's the one I want.
I am silly,it is almost 3AM here and I am going to bed.
Take care!

I lOVE BioFreeze!  I had a hard physical job for 30 years.  I had back problems and major aches and pains.  The BioFreeze was a God send.  My Mom was told to try it and thought it was just wonderful (She didn't listen to me when I told her about it)

BAND REMOVED 9-4-12-fought insurance to get sleeve and won! Sleeved 1/22/13! Five years out and trying to get that last 15 pounds back off.

mag oxide to poop
mag citrate (pills-not the bowel prep) for muscles and if you want it to enter your blood stream

I'll post a thingy on mag here, but separately

I did add some thoughts of my own in among his.

But I thought I'd excerpt this in simple to read list form so we'd know WHY it's so critical.

Article was written by Mark Hyman, MD
Putting Magnesium Back in Your Life

from Organic Connections Mar-Apr 2008

1. how do I know? Where is the clue?

* magnesium is not well measured in blood. Most will test normal, but
it only indicates what is in the blood, not what is available for the body to use

* the testing, he says, is a good medical history. Anything that
twitches, camps, spasms or is tight in any way is a sign of magnesium deficiency

2. naturally occurring in these foods:

* kelp

* wheat bran

* wheat germ

* almonds

* cashews

* buckwheat

* brazil nuts

* filberts

* millet

* pecans

* walnuts

* rye

* tofu

* soybeans

* brown rice

* figs

* dates

* collard greens

* avocados

* parsley

* beans

* barley

* dandelion greens

* garlic

we all eat some of these, but how much?

3. but how did I lose it?

* high doses of:

* coffee

* colas

* high salt

* sugar

* alcohol

* water pills (diuretics)

* some medications

4. what are some signs?

* muscle cramps or twitches or spasms

* insomnia

* irritability

* sensitivity to loud noises

* anxiety

* autism

* ADHD

* heat palpitations

* angina (spasm of arteries)

* constipation

* spasms in the muscles

* headaches

* migraine

* fibromyalgia

* chronic fatigue

* asthma

* kidney stones (cal-mag imbalance)

* high blood pressure

* irritable bladder

* irritable bowel

* acid reflux

* PMS

* depression

ALSO, obesity and diabetes are related to magnesium deficiency!

I could go on with the details of HOW it works, but I'm condensing for easy reading

5. So, can I just grab some at the drug store?

* these forms will not help with muscles:

* magnesium carbonate

* magnesium sulfate

* magnesium gluconate

* magnesium OXIDE (and my own adder to this is that this CAN help
alleviate constipation!)

These are not absorbed into the system.

6. Fine, then how DO I fix it?

* While he does not specifically say WHICH one, we know that magnesium
CITRATE does help with leg and foot spasms.

* Personally, I can check off about 50% of the symptoms list and will
now eat them like candy throughout the day.

As usual, I am not a medical person, and am only passing along to you this very simple article for your own use. MD's are more likely to use magnesium as a last resort for heart or pregnancy issues. ND's are more likely to treat this right away, going with the assumption that most people are deficient, by default.
