Henrietta is leaving town

Hey gang,

I saw the surgeon and he confirmed my diagnosis (lol) of a left ingunal hernia. Very rare in women, only 2% of us ever get them. Leave it to me!  So, on the 23rd I have a date to say good bye to the old gal. Supposed to be a very short surgery and only 3-4 incisions. I'll just look at it as a reason to not vacuum or carry groceries for the next few weeks. Gotta find the positive, right?

He's also concerned about the severe acid reflux I have. Three times now I've aspirated stomach acid while sleeping, and believe me when I say I sure don't want it to happen again!  I'm on Previcid to keep it at bay, but the doc wants me to have an upper GI to rule out any "mechanical" problems. If it isn't mechanical, then it's just something I have to live with. Great.

Alrighty then, that's my update. Hugs would be appreciated.

Ah, gee Susan --- leave it to you have something we never even heard of!    Sounds like the surgery won't be too bad, so yep, you'll get a break from the lifting & heavy work.
The acid refux can cause real damage, I hope they can figure out how to fix or control it.
I have Barrett's Esophogus as a result of reflux (Since I was over-eating, I thought I deserved to have it, so never took anything to control it), and have get an EGD every two years with samples of the lining sent for pathology to rule out cancer (10% of people with Barrett's get esophogeal cancer).      So, I think reflux is bad, bad, bad....

Hi Jan, and thanks for that great hug!

I really would like to know what's causing the reflux, even if there isn't anything that can be done about it. My doctor is doing a new procedure for acid reflux, but because of my rny, I wouldn't be a candidate for it. If it isn't related to the rny, then I'm out of luck. I'm good as long as the company that makes Protonix stays in business!  He did say that the jury is out on long term use of proton pump inhibitors, such as previcid and protonis. So, I don't know where that leaves us long term. Guess only time will tell, huh?

Thanks again!

Take care

Susan

Hi Susan:

Farewell, Henrietta. I always look for a reason not to vacuum (I don't do it because of my back and knees ... I call the cleaning lady, but now I can only call her once a month).

As for acid reflux, got that! I have to get 'scoped every two years, except this year I have a return engagement in November, just a year after last year's scope (I have Barrett's esophagus, so I get every other year checks). Funny thing is, my bariatric surgeon said that, after I had surgery, I wouldn't have any more reflux because the stomach acid wouldn't be coming up. Two days after I was home, I started having heartburn again. So I'm not the only one, huh?

Yeah, I was told the same thing about reflux. I took Prilosec twice a day forever before my rny and didn't have this until about 2 years out. Guess we'll see what the upper GI shows and take it from there.

Take care!

I think the stats say that 95% of people who have GERD before rny are cured of it. Leave it to us to be different!

Yeah, I'm on Nexium twice a day but I'm only taking it once a day now because I can't afford it (it's $50 for a month and I'm trying to stretch it now on my reduced check).

Thank you, my dear!  I'm not too worried, just stinks that I have to do this at all. Sigh

Having just got rid of my own Henrietta I am with you on saying farewell and good riddance! You will feel better when that nasty little thing is gone. I will keep you in my prayers for a speedy and painless recovery. I know that you are in good hands.

Bill has Barrett's too and has so much heartburn...with everything he eats. The last time he had his scope he had 6...yes 6...ulcers.

I was told years ago that I had Barrett's and when I had a scope just before surgery I was told there was no sign of it at all. I still take Protonix though...it helps my stomach and for that I am grateful.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.
