I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.
- E. B. White
It must be mothers, because I sure remember my mom saying something similar (if you can't say something nice, don't say anything ... not that I always follow it ... but sometimes I type things out and then erase them, or mutter under my breath instead ... you get the drift).
I truly believe that I try to be more tolerant of others because so many were not tolerant toward me in my obese days, and I didn't like how it felt. So I will be respectful of others, regardless. I like the diversity of beliefs, feelings, sizes, shapes, colors, ethnicities, etc. A former sports editor of mine was disappointed when he moved from the diverse Chicago suburbs to a rather lily white Wisconsin city ... he said he missed all the colors ... and that wasn't being bigotted. What he was saying was missed all the different foods, people, sensations he found in our suburban area ... the blacks, Indians, Hispanics, etc., that weren't where he now lives. He liked the diversity. I agree. It makes things so much more interesting.
So I'm glad Margo isn't being targeted, but whoever is doing this, please respect everyone. That's all I ask.

Yes, Linda, and I wasn't being disrepectful, and I'm sorry if you took it that way ... excuse me, but it's a long-standing Associated Press style (since changed, but it's ingrained in my mind). I meant no disrespect to you or any other African American. If I would write white, I would lowercase it, too.
Smile,I understand. Having been so many things in just one life,I have settled on African American,as the other races seem to refer to themselves in the manner...Like Italian American, etc.
No offense taken.I too miss the diversity I grew up with in New York, people here seem touchy, isolated and segregated,it is sad.
My oldest grandson has been called names at school,as has his Caucasian friend,in a school that is predominately Latino. His friend's mom and I have actually had to sit down and talk to them,I think this may have made me more aware and sensitive then I have ever been.
I hope I did not offend you.
Have a nice night.

Do you think all African Americans prefer that 'lable'? I know the police officer that lives across the street from me refers to himself as Black and others as Black as well. Is it a geographical thing or just a personal thing? I'm pretty ignorant when it comes to the race cards. NO OFFENSE MEANT TOWARD ANYONE.

Hiya Jani,I don't know about geographical. It is very confusing, the proper term is African American. I have lived in New York,South Carolina,Boston,New Mexico, and now Arizona.
It may be generational,or attitude. To me one means color, and I am not black, neither is a White person white. The other to me,is heritage.
My friends just use my name. I have been married to a African American,an Irish American, and an Italian American.Turn them upside down, they all look alike,LOL!!
The first husband,I was 19 at the time, and I joked that it was a inter-racial marriage because he was from New Orleans and listed himself as a Negro,I,born in NYC,listed myself as Black,LOL! Black was a new term then, and rather militant.James Brown,"Say it Loud,I'm Black and I'm proud", comes from this era.
My mom who was Mulatto, stopped speaking to me because I wore an Afro and long skirts. My dad,who was West Indian, took pride in the fact that his family were never slaves. His people killed the Europeans, or whomever tried to enslave them.
If your policemen were face to face with me,I would call him an African American based on his heritage. I doubt he would challenge me. I think African Americans were trying to take the sting out of the word "black",change it from being derogatory.
I think about two years ago the NAACP had a burial for the N word....LOL! They were trying to take the sting out of it,and I know some people use it,and some other races think it is OK to use it,like "My N". It will never be OK with me,and most people of my generation.
I have been told repeatedly that when used it refers to a certain "type" of African American. For me,it is not OK to call an Irishman a "paddy",it is not OK to call an Italian an "eggplant",etc.
It is all derogatory and demeaning.
The bottom line is we are all Americans. When 9/11 happened, the devastation did not miss anyone do to religion, color, origin, sexual or otherwise. They hit America, period.
I do not take offense when something is obviously unintentional and there is absolutely no offense meant, like Eileen's statement.
Smile..

LOL!! Ahhhh the "F" word. An anagram for fortification, having sex without being married. It readily lends itself to so many uses in our society. I try not to cuss,I believe one can release negative energy by using words of anger. My daughter and I use things like "Awww fried chicken nuggets"! It cracks the kids up!!
