Giggle!! For real Pineview..
Seems this started in England where it was against the law,and when people were arrested, that was the official charge.

Jani Olivia has the meaning of the F word!!
"For Unlawful Carnal Kknowledge" it stems from English law.
"No offense to anyone".

Aloha to the most beautiful OFFer I know!!

I almost feel like I've been catapulted back in time. Your race has NEVER even been something I considered, and that has been my reality for many many years. But I so respect your intelligence and sharing of what you have experienced. I guess I'm Swedish/American. What difference does that make??? Rarely do I think about discrimination any longer because all of my associates either professionally or personally never mention it, and it is not an issue. Well...I have a small confession to make....MEN sometimes make me crazy with their strange ways of viewing the world!

I am the mother of two sons, and now the "tutu" to three grandsons. Can I possibly make a difference in their world view? I don't know. But I worry about that. I will do my best!

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

Dearest Karen,it would be nice if the country were made up of people who think like you. "The more things change, the more they stay the same".
Racism is rampant in America. Many of us have changed our views,I believe it is impossible to grow up in our society without some form of prejudice.
Barbra Streisand, who is a Queens,NYC girl of Jewish heritage, married to a Irish American, sang a song at her last concert,it was written by her son. It is called "You have to be taught to hate". Some of it goes like this "You have to be taught to hate, before you are 6 or 7 or 8,to hate all the folks your relatives hate, you have to be carefully taught."
Not everyone is thrilled we have our first African American president, trust me,I live in Republican country.
Nooses have re-appeared,there have been racial fights,Jena comes to mind. Some people say, racism is over,it is not.
Our family looks like the UN,complete with Vietnamese cousins. Men go to war,and they "fall in love",with the women of the country they are in. Some of them they marry, many of them they leave behind,if they are lucky they make it to America,if they are not, they are treated badly, outcasts in their society.
That being said, many many people have changed. This is good, and will continue. There is a line from The Hoodlum Priest that I love: "I can't change the world, but I won't let it change me."
As obese people,we experienced prejudice also. We just keep going, slowly, ever so slowly things change. The younger kids have a great handle on it though...smile.
Have a wonderful day,sweet Karen.

Aloha my OH sister....This is one of those times I wish I had a magic wand and could make you appear in my living room to "talk story." That is what they say in Hawaii which I've come to love. Each and every one of us are where we are because of how we have been raised. I am profoundly proud of those who have decided to say "no" and find the answers to life's HUGE mysteries for themselves. It was not easy in my family...believe me.

How can I tell you how lucky I feel to have had you come into my life. Actually all of our sisters/brothers here in the OFF teach us something.....and sometimes bring back memories of those times when we weren't strong enough to make decisions.

Sending you a hug....and something akin to magical in meeting you and hearing how the world brought you to this place.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen

Dearest Karen, you are so kind and sweet. We have story tellers who keep our history also. My family can be traced pretty far back, more on my dad's side (West Indian),than on my mom's side, due to slavery.
OFF is a perfect example of blending due to commonalities.
We meld because we are kindred spirits, our physical beings relate,we share the same history in this way.
You make me smile.

Dearest Karen, the dialog here has made me more aware, aren't honest discussions wonderful? I just answered Julia's post about the grand's pics and the Harry Potter movie. She was referring to the price, and I said I only go when it is 5 bucks,so I never feel "Gypped",gasp!! That is a prejudiced remark about the Roms, who speak Romany. Gypsy is a term used by outsiders and is far from flattering, sort of like the N word for them.
Sheesh!! Thank you! I have enjoyed your posts on this thread so touching,I shared them with my family.
Good vibrations being sent your way,may you sleep as well as you deserve to.
Thank all of you precious people.

Hi Lovely Lady,

I hope Barbara Streisand's son didn't claim to have written the song  "You Have to be Carefully Taught".  It was actually written in 1949 by Rogers and Hammerstein for the Musical "South Pacific"
It became a movie in the late 1950's.  There a lot of wisdom in that song.  The prejudice refered to in the story was between white or European romantic relationships with the polynesian women of the South Pacific.

Hiya Linda, you are right!! I remember,I love musicals!!
You know what?? Unless I took too many meds that night,I vow Barbra (she spells her first name funny),said that,I shall investigate.
That song is deep! Now  I want to watch South Pacific, and you just sparked a discussion of Hawaii,I want the grands to watch that! James A Michener tells such a wonderful history in the book, and I loved the movie.
Thanks so much Linda.
PS, hmmm I wonder if they are two different names,I mean the pronunciation is different. Maybe it is really close to bed time for me and I am pondering way too much...
