WOW I can't believe some of the prices you have to pay.  All I can say is I hope the salaries are equally as high!

Here we pay....

Bananas = .69 lb in supermarket .29 per lb at the farm stand
Peaches = $1.49 lb
Whole watermelon = $3.00 (at the farm stand)
Tomaoes avg $1.49 lb
Bread avg  = $3.00 loaf
Milk = $2.79 gal (CVS has it on sale this week for $1.79!)
Eggs, large = $1.49 (fresh from the farm are $1.75 a doz and I get them whenever they have stock)

Gasoling = $2.49 per gal

I couldn't afford to live in Maui for sure..........not if I want to eat.

How much do things like houses, electric, water, etc cost??

Aloha Moosie....your prices are closer to what I see every day except for gasoline, milk, eggs. etc. Ha! I am so thankful for Costco that came in and forced some of the local prices down.

I don't know quite how to compare electricity, water, etc. Housing prices have gone DOWN like everywhere else, but where in the past you could not find a condo on this island for less than $400,000....now you can...but in a place no where near the ocean.

You have to become creative to live here......and coupons are one of the things that I use for sure. It is so funny when my friends come back from a shopping trip and call saying..."guess what! I got a steak in the sale bin for $5.00!" That has been discounted TWICE!! Mostly things like steak go for $15.00 each!

Thanks for sharing your situation. I knew things must be much better on the mainland where there isn't the price included of getting to the middle of the ocean!

Aloha nui loa,

Hi Karen,
Here's CA prices- higher than normal, but not Hawaii high! We are both paying for our weather to some degree.

milk                  3.99 a gallon
bread               2.99 a loaf
peaches            1.99 a lb.
nectarines        1.29 a lb.
eggs                 2.00 a dozen
fancy lettuce     .69 a bunch
bananas             .99 a lb.
gas                  2.80 a gallon

We just got home from Canada and I felt the sticker shock there too. I'm sure Hawaii is higher because of the shipping, but they probably stick it to you for everything because they can. You aren't eating that much these days anyway, right? :)

Aloha my Calif. friend.....Yes...your prices are more in line with what we pay here...but still lower. My brother lives in Cupertino and we compare prices frequently and I tell him how lucky he is.

I know I am extremely lucky to be living in Hawaii...and I try to take that into consideration and look for bargains...it's like a job!! Ha⁄

Thanks for letting me know what things are like in your part of the world.

Aloha,

Karen

You're right  -  the prices in Canada re much higher than they are in the US except, maybe, Hawaii and Alaska!!
We are heavily taxed, but the payoff for me is that people are taken care of.  Part of the reason for our high taxes is the universal health care.

Well, Karen, gas is now $2.39 but oil prices are on the rise again (I know this because I edit the business pages and saw it on the biz wire), so look out for higher gas prices.

I bought a dozen eggs last Saturday for 88 cents and thought that was great. For awhile, the two big local chains, Spartan Stores and Meijer, were having a little price war over the "basics": eggs, milk, chicken, bread; every week, they were marked down the same at each store, with eggs at 99 cents, milk $1.98 a gallon, chicken 99 cents a pound (can't remember the rest). But that ended a while back.

I check the weekly sale papers every Sunday. Blueberries are 88 cents a pint now but they're in season (and probably a little cheaper at the farmers market if I can get my butt out of bed earlier Saturday morning). Peaches are in season here now (I know this, too, because I just edited a story on how good the local harvest is going to be ... no hail damage this year), but I'm not a big peach eater. I saw ground round on sale for $2 lb.; may buy some of that.

Yeah, Maui is a great place to visit, but too expensive for me to live. When I was touring Hawaii, our bus driver laughingly showed us a little hut and said, "Like it? It cost a half million to live there." It brought a lot of laughs. But probably not far from the truth.

Aloha Eileen....well...let's hope this come through. My computer just crashed, but now I'm back.

I was saying that I can't even imagine eggs at 88 cents a dozen!! Or milk at $1.99 a gallon. I think we have gotten indoctrinated here to think that a real bargain is a gallon of milk for $3.99!!

One of my "staples" is a container of papaya from Costco......all cleaned and seedless....$10.00. I wonder what that would cost on the mainland.

Thanks for sharing.

We are lucky to still have a war going on in our town between the Spartan owned store and the local Krogers.  We just had a Meijer open here too.  Milk has been $1.77 or less for a while now.  Egg have been under $1 for the same time frame.  Strawberries are still way to high considering it is harvest time here.
