Aloha Janet.....who I see too seldom!!

Please appreciate what you are paying for things!! $1.99 a gallon of milk is unheard of here!! $3.99 is a SUPER BARGAIN.....most place you see a gallon of milk for $7.99!! Your bread is similar to ours...and I just found a fabulous special at Safeway.......a dozen bagels for $5.99!! I mix up the energy bars and bagels an freeze them.

Thanks for sharing!

I can't remember the prices of all the items you mentioned but these are the ones I know

bananas $.49 a pound
milk $3.49 gal I buy lactose free so it is more expensive regular milk is around $1.99 gal
Gas - varies, averages $2.30 gal.  I got it for $2.19 Saturday in Galveston.
Bread - $1.50-$1.75 a loaf
Eggs - I can't remember but I know it is less than $2.00 a dozen

Houston's cost of living is a lot lower than many places.  If I go to a farmer's market prices are ridiculusly low.  Alas no farmer's market near me.  If I want to get to one I have to drive into the city.  It is something I sometimes do when I am already in the area.

Excellent thread Karen, thanks.

I am basically the same as Janet, as we both live in the metroplex.

I paid $2.19 for gas tonight.

Milk, $1.99 a gallon, but we can not use a gallon before it goes bad.  1/2 gallon is $1.49.

Eggs - we buy the flat with 30 eggs for about $3.25 or so.  Sometimes less.   More often than not we find the large dozen eggs for 88 cents at Albertsons.

GOD BLESS AMERICA!!!!!

Hi Karen,

About 3 years ago, I watched a program on Hawaii and it said that just about everyone there has to work two jobs in order to survive, due to the higher cost of food and gasoline, since just about everything needs to be shipped to the islands, but that most did not mind because of the beauty and atmosphere of where they lived, many of the people were former mainlanders. . .

Gas here is down to $2.23 per gallon
Milk in BJs is $2.36 per gallon, elsewhere I think it is about a $1 to $1.50 more
Bananas are about .59 per lb.
Peaches about .79 to 1.29 depending on where you shop and who is having them on sale, mind you many are grown here in this State. .
Blueberries, also grown in this State are about $2 a pint
Eggs, depending on which size, 99 to 1.29 per dozen
Campbells soups run anywhere from 99 to 1.29 depending on which kind.

The cost of everything goes up and up, yet the wages stagnate, I won't get on my soapbox here, but history repeats and remember the French Revolution. . .

If only you could survive on the beauty that surrounds you. . .

Hugs, Laureen

Aloha Karen,
Yes the prices in California are higher than some other areas of the states.  My solution to living in paradise is to plant your own private garden of eden.  Nothing beats those home grown fruits and vegies.  Not as much work as you may think once the drip irrigation is in place.  And a couple of chickens will keep the bugs in check.  You might even be able to trade some surplus for milk in up country.  I'd like to get a bicycle to help defray the gasoline expense and give me some more exercise.  Maybe someday soon.

Aloha my Carmel Valley friend....Oh, my dear, how I envy your being able to grow your own produce!! I live in a condo complex which is gorgeous and the lush tropical grounds are taken care of by gardeners, but we have NO place to glow our own produce. We are trying to resurrect a "garden" down at the end of our street which was once a mega producer, but the residents didn't put in the work needed to keep it going. I would so be down there every day!

My brother lives in Cupertino, and has a little hobbit house in Carmel. My son lives in Scotts Valley and works in Silicone Valley. I used to own a condo in Rio Del Mar....I sure wish I still owned it.! Would you believe I sold it for $250,000? It was 2 bedroom, 2 bath....and a block from the ocean. Sometimes I feel so sorry I did that....because I could be living near my grandbabies , but back in 2001 there was no marriage, no potential babies....so I moved to Maui and sold my Santa Cruz condo for a song.

Oh, Karen, is it in that area down by the park close to Kanai a Nalu? I remember an area that had such potential but was not being used.

Remember the book THE SECRET GARDEN? One of my favorite books. . . those kids bringing that garden back to life. I can still picture them finding the key, sneaking in and working so hard to bring it back. And they did!! Maybe you will become the "MAALAEA MYSTERY WOMAN" who plants and reaps the benefits. Roadside stand, you in your sarong and tan selling produce to all who stop by!

ALoha Karen....YES!! The garden is down at the end of Hauoli St........just past where you go into the parking spaces and the very end. I never got to see it in it flourishing glory, but was told that it produced HUGE amounts of wonderful fruits, veggies, and flowers. So sad that there was not enough interest on the street to keep it going.

It's so nice that you know the places that I speak about........and have been to many. Once Maui gets into your heart and soul........it will always be there calling you back.

Aloha nui loa,

Maui Karen
