A week or so ago, you asked what different things cost in the areas in which we all live.  I didn't respond because I didn't have a recent grocery receipt.  I have it now.  Here are the costs of a few items:

Fuji Apples $1.49/lb; Doz Eggs $1.29; Bananas $.59/lb; Sm Container Grape Tomatoes $2.99; Sm Container Blueberries $2.00.  Also, unleaded gas is $2.85/gal here.

We live in Newport, Oregon which is a coastal town.  Gasoline in the valley (over the mountain) runs $.20-$.25 less per gallon.

Things run more over here but we love living near the ocean so I guess we accept that.  We don't have a Costco here (there's one in the valley) but we do have a smaller Wal-Mart and a large Fred Meyer's (Kroeger).  I do most of my shopping at those two stores and shop in bulk at Costco whenever we are in the valley.

I should shop at the Farmer's Market but don't because I don't like crowds and it's usually pretty congested at the Market.

Aloha Cindy and thank you for your taking the time to respond....and from a receipt, too! Your prices are amazing compared to ours. I can't believe your bananas are 59 cents a lb. when ours (on sale) are $1.59!! Sometimes the little apple bananas are even more......and they are growing everywhere!

Yesterday gasoline was almost back up to $4.00 a gallon. Makes me glad yet again that I have a little car.

The Oregon coast is glorious!! I used to go to Rockaway Beach a lot when I lived in Portland. Then, I almost bought a place in Brookings a few years ago. That would have changed my life!! I would have been there instead of here!!

Thanks again!!

Aloha nui loa,

Aloha Jani.....I am finally back online.......and thanks for your response. I am telling my friends what prices you all are paying and we are outraged!! I know we live in the middle of the ocean....but $2.00 a gallon more? I don't think so!

I hope you are feeling better and better.

Aloha nui loa,

Karen, prices here in New Orleans vary so much from store to store.  I'm so thrilled that we have this really cheap store Sav-A-Lot.  Mostly no-name things, but most are of good quality.  Their meat prices are not competitive though.

Sav-A-Lot:
bananas 3 lbs/$1.00
1/2 gal milk $1.89
8 oz bar of cheddar cheese $2.19
chicken thighs $1.39 lb
10 oz bag fresh spinach $1.89
store brand cake mix $0.79 box

Winn Dixie:
bananas $0.69 lb
1/2 gal milk $2.69
8 oz bar cheddar cheese $2.89 (sometimes 2/$5.00)
chicken thighs $1.19 lb
10 oz bag fresh spinach $2.49
cheapest brand cake mix $1.39 box

going price for gas, again varies from $2.27 - $2.39

Always looking for a bargain!

I saw 2.15 a gallon gas on my way to work this morning - it's 2.25 a gallon on my Little Island :-)  AND the refineries are right across the bay - go figure that one!!

I was on Galveston Island a few days ago and a chevron station on Broadway had gas at $2.19  that was 10 - 30 cents cheaper than I could find it on the "mainland".  I filled up quick.

Karen,
I use to live in Anchorage, Alaska in the 80's and thought I would fall over with the prices of bread and Milk..I think back then a gallon of milk was $3.00 a gallon. Who knows what it would be now.  Alaska and Hawaii have to have food flown in and that adds a lot to the price of food. Sorry, but you do live in a beautiful state...I hope it helps to make up for the high prices..Best wishes

HI: Here on pennsula, 2 hours west of Seattle.  Gas is down to 2.65/gal.  We have a really small Walmart - no groceries and a Safeway and Albertsons.  Milk is 1.99/gal, sugar 2.79/5 lb, best food mayo 2.99, tomatoes are 1.99.  We have a Costco 15 miles away to buy bulk.  Talked with my son in South Carolina gas is running 2.10/gal
