Maui Karen and groceries
I'm watching an offering on the Sundance Channel called Kokua Festival and learning why your groceries cost so much. They got me to watch it because I thought it was a music festival, but it is much more.
Take a look at this, if it is new to you. http://www.kokuafestival.com/
I was especially struck by the woman who said that they can't even bake a loaf of bread in Hawaii without ingredients from off the islands. You talk about the cane fields, I never thought that something as simple as grain wasn't grown there. I know there are (were?) Hawaiian Cowboys, but now I wonder about dairy farms.
Watching the schoolchildren planting and harvesting the veggies for the first time in a place I think of as nearly paradise was a real eye-opener. And reduce, reuse, recycle has more immediacy to me in such a small place. Come to think of it, earth itself is a pretty small place hurtling through space.
Just some observations from the mainland.

Aloha Jane......I wish I had seen the program. Yes, this is a totally different environment from the mainland, and so much has to be transported here from various parts of the world.....thus the HUGE expense added on for many things.
I am so thankful for the little local farmers' markets where fresh fruit, veggies and flowers are brought and are fairly reasonable. Our Maui onions are the best in the world when they are really fresh....you can eat them like an apple.
It is interesting isn't it that some very basic things like wheat aren't grown here. There is only so much open land...and most of that is owned by the sugar cane people. Used to be Dole owned a lot and grew pineapple...but that is going away slowly. I still love to drive around the island and see the waving sugar cane, and the spikey pineapple plants. The corn here is THE BEST....and grows all year round. Speaking of corn....I'm heading down to our little local deli.......corn is delivered on Fridays!!
