What Makes You Eat?
The best advice that I can give you is don't even try them. If you think they will make you sick, then let that be the reason to avoid them. Once you take that one bite, you will know and then you will have that food to use.
I'm like you, though, on wanting real food. Before and after surgery, my desire was cooked bad food. LOL. I still want potatoes and have to be very careful around those kinds of foods.

i eat from stress, boredom, reward, desire (a smell or visual or a memory of a food can trigger that)..i eat in the morning because i was trained to eat first thing outta bed after potty--my mom had breakfast on the table when we were kids- never even had to think of what to eat- i eat when i come home- am getting better about that but for years and years 1st hubby and i would eat the minute we got home from anywhere-even if it was simply a cookie or a piece of lunch meat...i eat at work for two reasons...one is that we don't get a "lunch" so i sit at my desk and eat and the other is that when i am having coffee i like something to eat with it---i have been on a crackers and cheese or pb kick and yesterday i noticed that i only ate 4 of the 6 crackers- how cool was that??? i am better about limiting myself and not grazing all day long!!!!
as a member of the clean plate club growing up-you know there were starving armenians!!!! --i tend to want to eat it all but i am now finding that i pass some to hubby..we serve ourselves at the table and that is not good for me to have the food right there to grab another bite...
i also love to have the textures and the flavors...i grew up eating a wide variety of foods and enjoy the tastes and textures in my mouth....i will crave crunchy or sweet or salty or smooth...
i used to enjoy cooking ...shopping , making the list, scouring the cookbooks...now it's function-get it prepared and on the plate..and i don't like that but i have lost some of my desire for the preparation aspect now...doesn't help that michael is an excellent cook... and i was an awesome pastry baker...ouch!!!
and i have a problem with portion control to this day....the small plate and utensils trick doesn't work for me...measuring food makes me feel deprived-- and i never actually (but for about 6 very lean money weeks in 1972) have been deprived of food- yet i eat like it's the last meal i'll get --not the quantity etc that so many of us went thru last meal syndrome pre wls...just that i eat sometimes like my body knows it will not be fed again for weeks!!!
because i was a "lightweight" my doc "did me a favor" --NOT!!!!!!!!!! he left my pouch a tiny bit larger than many...and i do not feel that has helped me....
so-triggers are many ..... i know how i am sposed to eat and i am really not too bad about protein first etc ...i just need to really really pay attention to what i eat and when i eat it! and i need to get my butt moving again...exercise is key ....
yea-most of my eating issues are def in my head!!!!
I get up every morning determined to both change the world and have one hell of a good time. Sometimes this makes planning my day difficult.

I feel your pain with the not ever being allowed to leave food on the plate. When my children were young, it killed my sisters that I would let them leave food. I still use the baby plate and always will. In fact, if we don't have any small plates clean, which is likely at the end of the semester, before I will eat, I wash the dishes. We don't put out food on the table because I am not going to have the potatoes or beans there for me to think one more spoonful. I put the food in our plates, put the leftovers away, and we eat. Hubby doesn't need to eat seconds so it all goes in the refrig or down the garbage disposal.
I, though, can eat the hell out of some melon. I allow it because of the water content and the sweetness gives me pleasure without dumping. LOL.
Our food issues are never ever resolved. I think at best we can semi control them.
