A cheerful post about my African Grey
For those feeling down in the dumps or challenged with life's hardballs, I'll share a few phrases that hopefully will put some cheer in your heart and life as you read the silly phrases she says. She sounds like me, and she mimmicks just about everything I say.
She is the most lovable, adorable pet that anyone could ask or hope for. We love her dearly. Her name is Obi. It's an African name, meaning heart/soul, which I felt was appropriate since she was a 25th wedding anniversary gift to me from my husband and she was born on my mom's death date. Obi is 20 months old now. Thanks to you, Obi, my furry little friend who adds so much happiness to our home.
She says:
Psssst....come here, I wanna tell you something, go **** in your hat.
You wanna eat? Go eat.
Hi Obi.
Want some grapes? I want grapes, YUM. Go eat your grapes.
Want a cracker? I want a cracker.
I'll be back, bye bye.
I love (can't say the 'you' with it yet).
Wanna go to work?
I wanna go to work.
You wanna go back?
You're my baby.
You're a good girl.
Hear the birds (we have so many outside).
It's okay, it's okay (I said this to her before she could fly and she would crash into something).
Cuckoo, cuckoo, cuckoo.
Peek-a-boo.
Want your block? Go get your block.
Want your ball? Go get your ball.
STOP - in a screeching voice (mimmicking me -- I tell this to my husband as he grabs me on the sofa every night - lol)
Please let happiness and laughter be the tour guide for your day! TGIF!

Debbie, thanks for sharing with us today. I think your Obi sounds like a sweetie. I do so love hearing them talk...they are amazing to me that they can learn the things they do.
I am deathly afraid of birds but they are very pretty...as long as they are in a cage when I am there by them. ha ha I had a incident with a bird when I was in junior high with a friend that terrified me and I have never gotten over it.

Brenda,
I'm sorry to hear you are afraid of birds, but glad that you can enjoy them still. My piano teacher also had a traumatic experience with a bird and she's very frightened of them. Obi is a good girl and we laugh every night at dinner when she's in her cage, climbing on her toys and saying so many funny things.
THANKS FOR SHARING THIS POST! I love birdies! My ****atiel is 17 years old this month. He doesn't have the vocabulary of your african grey but he can say "Hi Bird!" He loves to whistle and loves to whitle to the Andy Griffith Show theme. He eats every meal with us and is our feathered son. Enjoy Obi. I know he is your joy! See if you can post a picture of him....
Marcia,
How cute! We have two ****atiels too. Fred is 15. I think they can live to be 30 years old, can't they? Ours whistles the Griffith tune somewhat. They are adorable birds. We had Fred and Ethel, and when Ethel died we got Fred a companion, Barney. Sounds like he's your friend too! I love birds.

That's hilarious ... my Grandpa Briesch had a parakeet, Pretty Boy, that talked a lot; he'd say "Pretty Boy," ... can't remember anything else. But he'd also sit on Grandpa's shoulder and his finger, and drink out of Grandpa's beer glass. It was a fun bird. Now, the bird we had, Charlie, talked a little bit ... he also said Pretty Boy, and Charlie's a Pretty Boy, Merry Christmas.
LOL - I should have said feathered friend - guess I'm so used to having a dog. We had to have our dog put down last Christmas, but she lived a good, full life.
Birds are hatched. Obi definitely responds to everything I say. We communicate daily, and she mimmicks just about everything I say....things I don't even know I'm saying - lol

Oh, this brings back memories! I lost my AG, Grace, 2 years ago. I had fed her from about 4 weeks old, she was 15 when she died. I had to board her, picked a very highly recommended place. One of their 'staff' mistakenly took her our of quarantine and placed her in the public playpen. She caught something that infected her airsacs and was gone in a matter of a week. I still hear her talking to me! She had a very large vocabulary, as I'm sure yours will...your Obi has a great start!
When we stop traveling I WILL get another Feather Child!
