Quitting smoking

I am not, repeat not having a smoke with my first cup of coffee this morning. I think I want one but I keep telling myself no.
As you know I am on chantix and was down to 4 a day, next thing is, things started happening with my daughter (Will tell yall about her sometimes) and I went back up to 8 then a pack day before yesterday. Yesterday I did good, and only smoked 9.  Yayy me!
So today I am not having first cigarette for the day, It has been on with my brain lol, I have been up thirty-five minutes and havent lit up. And it is usually first thing I pick up. I have been waiting for certain lengths of time between ciggys to test myself, and  get back to four a day without the morning ciggy so it will be easier for me to quit. I have to conquer my mind, and I am trying hard.
So lets all have some yogurt, and excercise ten minutes outside, mosquitoes allowing, oh crap! I cant set up my cloud yet, mom has to move her car first, and she is still sleeping, not getting up til 9 this morning. She only has to work a few hours today.   Guess I will ride my little bicycle pedal thingy in the house while I do some reading on OH!
                               Have a wonderful day yall!

Good for you!

Let me tell you that quitting smoking has been said to be harder than kicking a narcotics addiction and I've known some heron addicts that will agree to that one. . .  I quit that habit 6 years and 5 months ago, it took me probably 10 attempts before I finally did it and I can say that over the last couple of years, maybe 2x I had any urge to smoke and it was easy enough not to give in to it, as I don't like anything about that habit and now as a post-WLS patient, I also know it's a no no because it can cause ulcers in our "new" little stomas.  Not to mention that today I can breathe well, have not had bronchotis in the last 6 years, even colds are seldom what the used to be, so my overall view on smoking is, quit and be done with it, not to mention there are lots of nice things I can do with the money I used to spend on those damn cancer sticks. . .

Distract yourself when the urge strikes, avoid people and places where there is a lot of it going on, at least for the first 30 to 90 days, I did it cold turkey last time so that the next time I thought I wanted to smoke I could remember that it is a tough habit to kick, one of the best things I did for myself was quit smoking.  I wish you success, the next few days are tough, the weeks ahead may be hard too, but you can get through it!

Hugs and best wishes for your healthier choices in life, Laureen

Thanks for the encouraging reply Lauren I have set October first as my quit date, and if the chantix dont help me succede I will have to quit cold turkey. My surgeon requires  you to stop smoking 6 to 8 weeks before surgery.
And plus with my savings I wanna buy a nice bicycle. I found one at walmart that is sweet, nice wide tires and seat for $99. Trade unhealthy for healthy, right?
Hope you have a nice day.

Congratulations on the progress that you are making. I have never had that habit and I am so glad. I of course have other habits and those are not good either. Most of our habits are not good...at least mine are.

My husband is stopping smoking and is going into his 6th week tomorrow. Bill has tried to stop many times. He did use Chantix one time and stopped for 3 months and then started again. He is using the nicotine patches now and is halfway through step 2. After step 2 is done he then goes to step 3 for 2 weeks. He was a 3 pack a day smoker and has done that dirty habit for the past 42 years. He is feeling better and has more energy and not as many health problems as he has in the past.

Bill is now in the hospital after breathing bleach fumes at work. He has shortness of breath and they ran tests and found that he is the early stages of emphysema. I knew that he was getting it (my dad was a smoker and had it bad) but he wouldn't listen. Now the doctor told him that his quiting is the best thing he has ever done or could do for himself. He says that he feels better and he physically gets sick to his stomach when he smells them. He has that problem at work. He will go out to get air and some of the guys are smoking and he has to leave. I am so glad he has that "problem". It does make it easier.

I know that you can conquer this in your life. Just remember that you are a strong person and you will not let those little coffin nails stop you from having a healthy and active life. There are a lot of bad things that happen from those little nasty and stinky things and you don't need them in your improved life. You are a stronger person that those little things made of tobacco and paper and lots of nasty deadly things too. Why have a new life just to cut it short? Just some food for thought!

I will keep you in my prayers.......please keep us posted on how you are doing.

It's not what you gather, but what you scatter
that tells what kind of life you have lived.

I have always been a pack a day, unless stressed.
I thank you for the prayers.

I have been up for 2 1/2 hours or more and have had only one ciggy.
I can breathe better already. I can tell I am making some progress with my baby steps that I am starting pre-op . I feel much better already.

Yes, you must stop smoking.  Completely.

I became terribly sick from smoking in my 40s and quit.  Then, 10 years later, I started again and smoked for about a year and a half.  Until I was coughing had bronchitis and was hospitalized with what my doc thought was a heart attack (it wasn't).  Instead, my bronchials were spasming.
Chantix made me sick.
I used a patch and quit last December.   Long before my RNY surgery.

Smoking is suicide.   It is deadly.   But you are not going to quit by smoking one or two.
That's like a heroin addict just having a "one hit kit".    It's a scam.

Congrats on the 8 pound weight loss.  I actually gained 25 pounds during the 4 months I was supposed to lose 15, before surgery.

So now, after RNY, I have lost that 25 and 10 more so far - it's been a month.

You Can Do this!! The other thing you can try to help, is smoke no where but outside
of your dwelling. In a patio on a porch. Take the ashtrays out of your house. If you have to go outside to smoke you will automatically smoke less.  Do not smoke in your
car either. Make some small changes & it will get easier to give them up. You have to
do this prior to your surgery & afterwards as well. Your health is why you are doing
this.
Glad you are feeling better.

I live with other smokers, and it is my moms house so i cant change the rules, we can only smoke in kitchen at table and in bathroom, so i try to stay away from those areas
Even tho my computer is in the kitchen I dont smoke while at it.

Oh dear that must be very hard.   I suppose quitting smoking is very individual - what works for some does not work for others.  It's great you are trying ...   I have to say I was lucky that I did not have other smokers around.  My husband does not smoke and hated my smoking.
You are very courageous for trying.

Marilyn, that is really true.  I would not smoke except outside.

Another thing you might consider is to set a date to stop entirely, and prepare yoursef.

Also, I'm sorry if I sounded harsh.   Sometimes my suggestions can be a bit dogmatic.

I don't mean to be ...

Quitting smoking is so terribly important to your health and happiness.
