Has anyone gotten extreme stomach pain from vicodan?

I had oral surgery this am and took a vicodan - and have had waves of excruciating stomach p;ain -  stabbing pain...

Jeane - sorry you are having such pain.  I couldn't tolerate vicoan before my surgery - terrific pains in my stomach followed by vomiting.  I won't touch it now.  Hope you are better soon.

Take care!

Nope, never had a problem with vicodin, fortunately (because if I did, I'd be in big trouble due to my knees and back). Call your dentist/doctor and let them know.

Yes, I did.   My dentist gave me a different pain killer - oxycodone without tylenol.  That isn't often prescribed b/c it is such a controlled substance.  But he gave me a few pills, because of the oral surgery and the problem I had with vicodan.
I'm feeling a little bit better.   I just think the tylenol in the vicodan was too much for my stomach.
I was reading about tylenol and it can easily be too much - 1000 mg a dose is an overdose, and this was 750.  Stomach pains is a symptom of too much.

Right now my husband is fixing hot tea - peppermint tea with splenda  - hopefully that will help.
I'm feeling a bit better but it's been over an hour.

The stomach pain was worse than the toothache!

Swallow a mouthful of PB first, then another after. I actually took mine IN a wad of PB, but not everyone can manage that.

Fat helps the potential for sphincter of oddi spasms. Now, don't ask me for all the why's 'n wherefores, but I know when I broke my arm, when i just chugged it with water, an hour later, I was writhing in agony, but when I actually walked to kitchen and issued myself a gob of PB, I was fine.

I'd heard it as anecdotal, and then did read the why's of it, but that was 2 yrs ago. WHATEVER. I just know to take any narcotic with some fat.

I suspect that's why I'm not too wild about PB now. At least, random PB. Has to be in celery. LOL

Thanks so much for your responses.  Although, it took me awhile to realize what "PB" was!   Than it hit me - duh!  That's the stuff I use to give my dog Molly Bloom her pill!   Why shouldn't it work for me too?  I love it!

I am feeling a bit better now.   I guess the vicodan went through my system.

I don't think it was actually the narcotic but the tylenol.
I googled tylenol and stomach pain today.  I guess I'm not that unusual.  Tylenol, in fact, can cause the extreme stomach pains - and is not as safe as people sometimes think.  It is hard on your liver, too.   Of course, excedrin is hard on your kidneys.   I found that out when I took a lot of excedrin when I used to jog...  jogging I used to keep my weight under control until my knees gave out.  I was then taking excedrin every day because of the joint pain.   It's probably just as well that I can't take NSAIDs or excedrin any more.

I know doctors are reticent to prescribe oxycodone, because it is a "pure" narcotic, but for me it is better.   It does not kill my stomach.  Of course, i am also acutely aware of how addictive it is, and never take it more than a day or two.   Fortunately my dentist and internist have known me long enough that they are not worried about my abusing it.

Vitalady - you wrote that fat helps the potential for " sphincter of oddi spasms."
What do you mean by this?

Yeah, see, i knew you'd ask me. As far as I know, it's more of a syndrome, not really proven, only suspected.

but if some PB helps prevent it, why not? I've found it happens with any narcotic taken without fat. And morphine, forget it, nothing protects me from that.

google it and see what you come with.

No pain after pills?

Not a bad deal, huh? simple! When mine first started, the back of my brain said, "Uh oh, more surgery", so you can imagine how happy I was when someone posted the PB treatment. Whew.
