Hey there everyone,

I'm finally home from the hospital.  Sore and weak, but I'm hanging in there.  They teased me the day after surgery, calling me the Gastric Bypass Poster Child and then BOOM - down I went.  Pneumonia set in, I had low potassium and wasn't producing enough urine.  So they pumped me full of potassium and Lasix and triple antibiotic coverage for several days.  Thankfullly, I got to come home yesterday at 3 p.m.  I may take some pain med since I'm pretty sore, but I've had a shower, drained the drain, ate some Cream of Asparagus soup, which was yummy, and now off to rest before it's time to get up and walk some more.

I'm sipping away, just trying to figure out how in the world I am going to get protein in.  Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated.

I hope you all are doing well.  I've missed reading everyone's posts.

Have a great day!

Hi Debbie, and welcome to the losers' bench!

Oh, I know all about low potassium ... did they give you liquid potassium, that yucky orange powder? If they did, mix it with Crystal Light orange ... it will make it taste almost like Orange Crush (I say almost because it still has that metalic taste but it's a little better and not as bad as trying to drink it straight). Oh, and did you have to get potassium through an IV ... fun, huh? I did that too ... both pre-op and post-op ... hurts like hell.

As far as getting your protein in, I don't know what your doc told you or if you have a nutritionist, but have you tried any protein drinks? If not, get some ... you should probably be on liquids at this point ... or at least I was ... I know every doc is different on post-op care. If you're eating soup already, you can try putting a tasteless protein powder call AnyWhey into soups and puddings and yogurts, etc. They are other tasteless protein powders, too.

Call me if you have any questions. I'm home during the day (I'm in the directory if you got one, or e-mail me and I'll give you my phone number). I'm here to help! Good luck! Hope you're feeling better after all your trials.

Welcome home sweetie, so sorry you had problems but you sound good. Please don't worry about trying to get in all the needed protein for a while. a couple ounces at a time of protein drinks right now and your water. if you like those cream soups, add some of that flavorless protein. Be good to yourself, and CONGRATULATIONS !!

Hi "Rosey"...Glad you are home. Welcome to the Loser's Bench.  We've scooted over and made room for you hon.  Rest, sip, rest, walk, sip, walk, rest and the rest will come later.  It's important to get those fluids in and don't worry too much about the protein right now.

Hi Debbie,
It's over YEAH! So happy for you and now the fun begins lol. When I first came home I drank sugar free carnation instant breakfest comes in a few flavors with super skim milk a few times a day. Relax, you just had surgery so it all takes time. Go slow and sip your water and really don't worry right now about the protein.
Love ya Gail

Welcome home Debbie,

Right now your fluids are the main objective. The others gave good advice to add protein.

A shower always made me feel more human. And there is no place like home.

Don't worry about getting all the protein in right now...it will come with time. Take it easy and let your body heal and before you know it you will be back to normal.

I am glad that everything is over and your body will soon catch up.

Hey there Debbie,

Glad you're finally home.  Sounds like you spent some extra time in there eh?  Too bad, but thankfully they got you on the mend right away.  Sorry you had to go through it though.  I guess I was really lucky.  I barely remember the feeling of trying to get all my water and protein in.  I remember it was hard, and I couldn't take in too much at one time.  Now I can take four gulps of water at a time now.  I can tell when I need it too, because I get very thirsty.
I still haven't had any salad.  I'm afraid it will be too hard on my pouch.  I don't know what gave me that idea, but it's in my mind.  I've had several different fruits and different veggies, but no salad yet.  Is that weird I wonder?
A gal from the Michigan board is coming over today to pick up some protein powder that I don't like.  It's the Body Fortress Cookies and Cream.  Much too sweet for me.  If I feel I'm not getting in enough protein, I just add a protein drink made with skim milk or water, depending on my needs.  Have you looked at FitDay.com for the food log?  It really works well for me.
Hope you're feeling well soon.  You've got my number if you need/want to talk.
YAY YOU!!

It is what it is.
If He brings you to it, He'll bring you through it...
