I'm sad.
Gary and I just got home from having our dear Sherlock aka Old Dog put to sleep. I'm sure by now my mom is greeting him with a big plate of dog cookies.
I've spent most of the day laying next to him on the floor, trying to keep him warm (I had a blanket on him) and comfortable. I told him all the things he would like to hear, how he's been the prince of the house, sleeping anywhere he chose, and eating only the finest sofas money could buy. He was a pain the the butt and the joy of our household for 15 years. We will miss him terribly, but couldn't wait until his was any farther gone. He could only see out of one eye, only heard the cookie jar open, not ever the door bell or fireworks going off any more. The UPS man was quite pleased about that.
I can't cry anymore, there are no more tears. But, I do want to go be with Gary and Baxter, the new heir apparent.

Oh Dear Susan...I can feel your pain. We have lost many a pet and our dear old Jake whom is 13 years old cannot see, cannot hear very good anymore and walks like John Wayne because of his arthritic legs and back, will probably not see another summer. He is such a sweetheart too. He is part Border Collie and American Eskimo and I swear can understand everything we say. These pets are a part of your family and only animal lovers will know what I mean. I believe that GOD has a place for our dearly departed pets up in Heaven. I sit here with tears running down my cheeks feeling your hurt.

Sandy

I'm really really sorry. Susan..I have had to say goodbye to a number of my old dogs and cats and yes, it tears you into pieces. However, you have given him a loving family life and he will always be in your heart. And, as my vet says, you;re doing the right thing, ending his suffering. He just went to sleep and will be, by now, frolicking around without pain and with a new zest in his bounce, and with a mouthful of doggy treats..what more could a doggy want?

My sofa, to go? Honestly, thank you Nancy for your kind words. I was so numb with the passing of my family (all within 16 months of each other) that I'm sure I didn't cry like I did today.
I'm so glad Sherlock had a chance to be happy in AR. Running through the snow, chasing squirrels up trees. Meeting our Tess who loved him so much.
He was a lucky dog. We were lucky to have had him for as long as we did

Oh Susan, you have my sympathy.
I know what you mean when you write "He was a pain in the butt and the joy of our household..." I think that the dogs that are loved the most are both a pain and a pleasure. My German shepherd who died in 2007 was the bane of my existence and the light of my life and I told him so all the time.
Thank you for being someone who truly loved this old dear and who knew that it was the right time to say goodbye. You are a sweetie.

Oh Margaret, you DO understand!
I've known for sometime now that his time was coming, but Gary was in total denial. If Sherlock got up from sleeping and did the splits, then Gary would say it was because he slept on his leg funny. Or his refusal to eat was him just being picky.
No, 15 is a very old age for German Shorthaired Pointers. He had a good one.

So sorry to hear about your loss, it's so sad when we have to put our pets down. When our cat Corkey passed it was so devasting, my husband and I cried for months. She was a loving cat with a attitude,
Now we have a cat tigger, my husbands, when the cat wants something she go's to him. I tell him that she has him wrapped aroung her paw..

I still get teary over our ****ateil that died a dozen years ago in San Diego. I can'****ch to horrible commercials from the Humane Society, or whoever does them, or even the Iam's commercials. God forbid there's a new story about some animal cruelity!!!! I'll break a leg jumping for the remote.
No, this would not have gone on much longer, even if I would have had to take him myself.
Thanks for the kind words and understanding
