Canadian universal health care
It is a misconception that In Ontario we do not pay for OHIP coverage.
We do .

How are the health premiums collected?
The premiums are implemented through the Ontario Income Tax Act and administered by the Canada Revenue Agency (CRA) under the existing tax collection agreement between Ontario and the federal government.
The health premium is deducted from pay and pensions of those with employment income or pension income of more than $20,000 a year, as part of federal and Ontario income tax. To ensure that employers do not incur added costs to change their payroll systems, the health premium is included on pay stubs as a component of the income tax withheld.

But, we have high taxes. I don't mind. Its part of the culture that we were raised in. I was raised to believe that because I have plenty and can share. I do share. I pay more so someone who isn't as fortunate can also have access. We all benefit.
I guess that is socialism. But who cares what you call it. It makes society a kinder place. What I have seen about the American response to this debate is sad. So much fear mongering and misinformation. I am sure the money being spent to fight this initiative would have been better spent to fund universal health care, feed the poor or fund state education. But the insurance companies will spend millions (billions) to protect their cash cow. Who benefits? Do you?

Your response to my post could have been written by me.
I feel the same as you do. This would not be a place that I would want to live if I had better health care than others simply because i could afford it. Why should I have better health care than someone else? Am I better than they are? I don't mind being called a socialist if that means we are treated the same.
Thanks.
Margaret
