Does anyone here over 50 take iron supplements?

My biggest issue is energy - I just bought Celebrate (grape) iron supplements.
Thought I'd try them.

I have not had my 6 week labs yet...   I suppose i need to get on the stick wtih that.

Do you know for sure that you are iron deficient?  I only ask because taking extra iron makes me very sick.  My PCP said for energy issues that I needed more B12.  SO I get a B12 shot every other week and I take 2 B12 sublinguals daily.  Would that help you too??

Good luck and if you can you may want you PCP to check you iron with the finger *****  If it not low, I wouldn't do extra iron...but thats me.

Let us know how you make out.

I agree with Marcy...get your iron level checked first.
I also take Sublingual B-12 2500mcg  daily and it has helped a lot! I buy mine at Walmart.....I don't take the shots yet.

depends on labs, there are more than just iron to dictate energy. It's a combination of things.

The first 3 months you will be sluggish. (there's my everything in 3's). During the 4th month you will all of a sudden get your energy back and say wow.....

Lots of variations here also, protein shake supplements, vitamins, etc.....

I guess I'm on track, then, since I still am sluggish..

But it hasn't been 2 months yet.

Jeane,  I'm not having too much trouble being sluggish, but I do take Iron and B-12 sublinguinal.  My surgeon told me to take them right off the bat, so that's what I've been doing.  I have a real hard time remembering to get in my 3 calcium tablets a day tho.  Two months out in three days!  Why did I wait so long????????

I've been taking iron from the beginning once I could swallow the pill down and the swelling was gone in my esauphagus.  I get my book work done every four months and my most recent results told me that all of my levels were PERFECT except for my IRON which was LOW-NORMAL.

He suggested more red meat but red meat no longer sits well in my new tummy unless it is ground.  So I upped my iron dosage value and eat alot more spinach as well.  And to prevent "stoppage" due to higher iron, I eat alot of fibre including assorted dry beans om my soups and even sometimes use "Bowel Buddies"    (made by Abundance Naturally - www.abundancenaturally.com ) fibre cookies(100 calories/cookie) to keep things moving.

P.S.  My year + long absence has NOTHING to do with my WLS, or my type of WLS. See my profile.

Are you taking a multi-vitamin with iron? Have your labs checked first. I didn't have to take iron until a year out, and even with the multi, I was really low. Two of the signs (I found out later) was severe headaches and irritability (gee, I'm always irritable!). I was having really bad headaches around that time, but I thought I was having sinus problems. Once I got on the iron, the headaches abated (still have them, but not as bad). I have never had high energy levels anyway ... I do take a B12 daily, along with the iron and a Vitamin C for absorption. The low energy I attribute to fibro. I now also take magnesium citrate ... almost finished with my first bottle and don't notice any difference.

I just had labs done today and an appointment with my doc in 2 weeks.

It's hard for me to tell how much energy is "normal" since my energy was soo low - I have MS, lupus and thyroid disease.
