have you ever had a job/career that you truly truly loved??? YES BACK IN 1980-1981 I WAS WORKING AT THE SHERIFF DEPARTMENT AND I LOVED IT!! IT WAS MY FIRST JOB EVER AND I HATED IT WHEN THE TIME WAS UP FOR THIS POSITION. (IT WAS A CETA POSITION)
you enjoyed getting up and going to work??? you looked fwd to it???? you weren't stressed when you came home??? I LOVED GOING EVERYDAY AS THERE WAS SO MUCH EXCITEMENT HAPPENING ALL THE TIME!!
what was so special about it? the ppl? the pay? the perks? what???? I ALSO LOVED WORKING AT THE HARDWARE AND BOTH JOBS MENTIONED I LOVED...THE PEOPLE...THE PAY WASN'T THAT GREAT BUT I LOVED GOING TO WORK EVERYDAY AND NEVER CAME HOME STRESSED...TIL I WALKED IN THE DOOR AND HAD TO PUT UP WITH GARY IN THE LATER YEARS WHEN HE WAS SO NASTY TO ME.
have you ever had a job that you absolutely detested -you don't have to name names or workplaces!!!! what was it about the job you didn't like or that stressed you? the hours? the pay? the boss? the commute? ONE JOB WAS AT A LAMINATING PLACE AND I ACTUALLY LIKED THAT JOB BECAUSE IT WAS 40 HOURS AND NO WEEKENDS OR HOLIDAYS...BUT THIS ONE WOMAN WAS A MEAN AND NASTY BIOTCH SHE MADE LIFE MISERABLE IF SHE DIDN'T GET HER WAY...
have you ever been tested to see what your perfect job would be??? do you agree with the tests??? YEARS AGO I WAS TESTED AND WAS FOUND TO BE FAST WITH MY HANDS...LOL NOW THAT I AM OLDER AND THE HANDS DON'T WORK SO GOOD ANYMORE I WONDER WHAT ELSE THEY WOULD SAY I AM GOOD AT...LOL
are you willing-even at our age-to continue your education to get ahead??? get a better job? start a new life??? CONTINUE EDUCATION? NOT FOR ME..I HATED SCHOOL...BETTER JOB? I AM MAKING MORE MONEY NOW THAN I EVER HAVE YET...AND I HAVE MY OWN BENEFITS TO BOOT!!! AS FOR STARTING A NEW LIFE...I ALREADY DID....AHHHH LIFE IS GOOD....except for rick being laid off that is!!!
When I was younger, I wanted to be a sports writer. I wanted to cover the White Sox for the Chicago Sun-Times. Seriously. That was my idea of a dream job. I never got to do that, but now I don't want to. It would spoil my joy of watching baseball.
But ... I did get to cover sports from 1979 to 1996, and when I left, I left on my own terms. I got burned out. I was tired of it. I was tired of dealing with coaches, parents, some of the players, going to games, etc. I loved writing, I just hated the procedure of doing it. My editor gave me a chance to be a copy editor and stay in the newspaper business, and so this is what I do now. And I do love it. I got to Grand Rapids and thought, wow, I finally landed on a newspaper that actually pays its employees decently, treats its employees decently. Well, that didn't last long. Newspapers are notorious for not paying well. At least this pays better than the other places I worked.
I do love what I do. I love working with words, laying out the pages, finding the errors, the holes in the stories ... it's fun. I don't like some of the crap I've had to put up with over the years ... higher-ups who don't know much, who don't give a crap while I'm working my tail off. The stress on a small-town paper is enormous ... 60-hour weeks for 40-hour pay, and then people call you at home and ask where their paper is.
I have been tested to see what I'd be good at. Once, when I was feeling that burnt-out feeling in S.D., I got tested ... and found out my strengths were in communications fields, like newspapers and public relations. So i didn't change jobs, just paths. It was actually kinda funny.
I would get education if I had the money to do so, but I don't know in what.
The only other jobs I've had since I was out of college (before I got the newspaper jobs) were as a secretary (I type 90-100 wpm) at a public relations firm, then got promoted to assistant account executive/secretary ... then I got laid off after a year; I was unemployed for a month two weeks after I bought my first car. Got another job as a publications assistant at a government finance officers association; was there for nine months before I got hired as a sports writer, which is what I wanted to do. I had other jobs in college ... hated working at Burger King, in food service, anything I had to stand up to do. My feet always hurt.
Good luck.
