Hi all, just wanted to say hello. I thought I would come to the over 50 board and get some feedback from post op's and those waiting. I am 60 and my RNY is scheduled for 11/10. Needless to say I'm reading up on different posts. Some people seem to have eating problems after surgery? I am hoping that everything turns out well. I just want things to go without any glitches. Is anyone being older have seemingly more complications than someone younger? I just want to find out as much as I can before surgery so I'm not surprised.
Thanks to all, Joyce
Thanks to all, Joyce
Hi Joyce. Welcome to OFF (Over Fifty Forum). My name is George. I am 58 years old. My wife of 34 years and I have both had RNY. We are both very happy with the results. We have 2 children and 6 grandchildren. I work overnight, so that is generally when I am on the board.
Two things for you. First, you will have problems eating after sugery. Practically everyone does. You just have to find what your problem is and work around it.
Second, check my profile, I have an excellent statement on it written by a member of another forum. I told her I would steal it, but give her credit. It is things she learned before WLS. Very informative. Check it out, please.
I don't think age has that much to do with complications. The people that generally have complications are those that don't follow the rules.
Hang around here. We have a bunch of nice folks. Mostly women.
Every morning we have the What's New thread or sometimes the What's New Revue, or whatever someone wants to call it. You just drop by like you are talking over a cup of coffee about what happened yesterday or what you are doing today.
Edited to add: tell us about yourself.

Joyce,
WELCOME to OFF! Glad you found us. You'll find a wonderful group of people here. I read everything I possibly could before my surgery and I'm so thankful I did. The better prepared you are, the better things will go for you.
I'll be 8 weeks out tomorrow. I'm introducing foods slowly into my food regimen. The softer foods still go down more easily. For me, I'm basically learning how to eat. I sometimes eat too quickly and swallow too much at one time, so I need to slow it down. I'm chewing everything perfectly, it's just a matter of taking smaller bites and eating more slowly.....but I'm doing great otherwise.
Good luck on your journey. As others have told me, hang on and enjoy the ride of your life! It's so true! What a journey. Not being on any more meds is like a miracle to me. I was taking 4 pills (2 for diabetes and 2 for blood pressure). When I left the hospital, I immediately eliminated 3 pills, and just recently eliminated the last pill for my blood pressure! HUGE! The weight reduction is another HUGE thing. I feel so much healthier already, and I still have a ways to go yet to get to goal, but I will get there!
You will find a tremendous amount of support here and a wealth of knowledge.
Welcome!
Debbie

Welcome Joyce,
It takes a while to RElearn what, when and how to eat after WLS. Working with a dietitian then following that advice helped the learning process.
I have had a couple of complications, all minor, but still have no regrets. Had I remained at 320 lbs, I would have had serious health issues. Life is good after WLS.
Good luck
Annette

Hi Joyce, welcome to the group. Good luck on your upcoming surgery. It is difficult to predict if you will have complications or not. Try not to gain weight before surgery. It will make the liver swell and make the surgery more difficult. A lot of people have the "last meal syndrome" and gain about 10-20lbs. Let us know how you are doing. Mona

Hi Joyce! Welcome to OFF!
I just wanted to wish you the very best of luck on your surgery! My RNY saved my life, made me healthier and gave me added years to enjoy! Both my husband and our daughter have also had RNY. What a difference in our lives!
I just wish I could have done it when I was much younger...
Good luck to you! I am saving you a seat on the loser's bench!

Hi Joyce:
Welcome to the board. Age is not a factor. There is a woman on the board, Pat Root, who is much older than you (and several others too) and they have not had problems after their RNYs. Yes, there are risks for complications ... as with any surgery. As for problems eating, well, some people do, some people don't. Follow the rules, and most likely you won't. But even then, well, there are chances you might have some difficulties ... each case is different. I have had no problems eating anything (even things I probably shouldn't). I have learned that ice cream ... even sugar free ... gives me problems if I eat too much. So I don't eat it often. And if I eat too fast or don't chew something enough, I also have problems. I learned these lessons early. Sometimes I forget them. Then I have problems again. Stupid, I know, but sometimes we're so hungry we can't wait to get that food into our mouths and then it comes right back up.
It doesn't happen often because I don't allow it to happen. I follow the rules, or try to.
I'm five years out and this has been a life-saver for me. If there's anything you want to know, just ask. The most important thing you can do after surgery is to take your supplements.
