I'm baaaaaack

Had surgery last week (6 days ago) and returned home on Friday.  I'm feeling great and have lost most of that gassy feeling  -  I know, TMI.  The gas was very hard to take, and I am truly glad that it appears to be gone.  No trouble eating.  I'm sticking to the nutritionist's schedule for the first two weeks after surgery and have been able to eat everything on the list, albeit a very short list.  I had some cream of mushroom soup last  night and even though it was the regular 10%, it didn't bother me.  I thought that I had purchased the low fat kind, but I was mistaken.  I won't do that again, but I was happy that it didn't make me sick.  I've had to go out once and I'm going out in a few minutes for some groceries -  I live alone, so there's no one to purchase food for me, although if I asked, one of my sisters or good friends would help.  Driving has been fairly easy and I am in very little pain - no pain killers since I left the hospital last Thursday.
Now, to get the vitamins straightened out IE right kind, chewable, liquid, etc  - any advice would be appreciated.
I have a good job that allows me to be off wor****il January 4, and I will enjoy every minute of my time.   I hear my 2 G. shepherds outside - they are playing and barking a special bark that they have for each other.  One of my happiest moments after surgery was picking up my two dingbats from the kennel where I had boarded them.  The owner of the kennel was the person from whom I bought my youngest dog.  My bigger dog, Ranger Derwood Kirby, who was rescued from an abusive home last year, made an impression on Lynda, the kennel owner.  She had boarded him once before and he wouldn't let her near him.  This time, it took one day and he warmed up to her and she acclaimed him to be one of  the sweetest dogs she has known.  I am so appreciative that he trusts enough now to let others near him - he is really a dear.

To Laureen -  my heart is still breaking for you.  Dillinger, and his/your story, was loved by so many people who never set eyes on him just through the way that you described the relationship you had with him and the dear boy that he was.

To Jean  -  I was so sorry to read that your mother died.

I'm glad to be back in the fold, and I know that you will have the answers when I have lots of questions!

Welcome back! Getting the vitamins straightened out seemed so hard at first but you'll shortly get the hang of it. Just remember a few things as you work out your schedule....

1. Calcium Citrate....we can only absorb 500mg at a time so need to take it 4 times a day, never less than 2 hours apart. Since we need 1800-2000mg per day, if you aren't getting 500mg through your food and protein drinks, add a 5th dose.
2. Iron can't be taken within 2 hours of Calcium. The calcium interferes with the absorption. But you need to take it with Vit. C, it helps your body absorb the iron. Also don't take your iron within 2 hours of any of these foods... dairy, eggs, fiber, tea, coffee, red wine, grapes, or spinach.
3. All the B vitamin are in the same family and like to be together! So take your B-12 with your Multi that has other B's in it. I also take a B-50 Complex so I make sure to take them all together.

Working out a workable schedule was the hardest thing, there's so much to get in, rules about when you can and cannot eat and drink, etc. I ended up writing out a schedule that really helped, especially for getting in all my water. The times may vary if I sleep late but the schedule is the same. Thanks to PamT for the basic schedule.

8:00-8:30 a.m. --- Pre-Breakfast  (usually a protein drink)
9:00-10:00 a.m. --- Water 8oz
10:00-11:00 n -- Breakfast – Calcium, multi
11:30 - 12:30 p.m. -- Water 8oz
1:00 - 1:30 p.m. --- Lunch – Calcium, D,
2:00 - 2:30 p.m. --- Water 8oz
3:00 - 4:00 p.m. --- Snack – Calcium, multi, 2/B-50, B-12 sub ling,
4:30 - 5:30 p.m. --- Water 8oz
6:00 - 6:30 p.m. --- Dinner– Calcium,
7:00 - 8:00 p.m. --- Water (maybe a protein drink)
8:30 - 9:00 p.m. -- Snack (protein shake)
9:30 - 10:30 p.m. -- Water 8oz, Probiotic
Bedtime (no food) – Vit C, iron

Dee - this is so helpful.  I've already printed off your post.  I know that I need a schedule because I am totally scattered without one  -  this will help a lot.  And the information about the vitamins was wonderful.
Thanks!

You're more than welcome! I have several copies of my schedule posted around the house....one on the 'fridge, one in my purse, one taped to my computer...one is in sight all the time! I'm getting better but I still depend on it.

Congratulations Margaret! And welcome home. It takes time to figure it all out. I was worried about  the protein when I first got home. Finally figured out that I probably had enough of everything "stored" to keep me from starving to death for several months. I concentrated on figuring out the supplements and getting in the fluids. It's nice that you have over a month off. Pamper yourself a bit. You deserve it!

Welcome Back,

sounds like your surgery went well.  Hopefully you'll get the vit & min figured out.  It took me a while.  I ended up with the gel caps.  Liquid didn't sit well for me and pills were hard too.

Margaret,

First off, welcome to the LOSER's BENCH, where because we are all winners there is always room for one more, I look forward to your Wow moments, as this is a very exciting time.

Thank you for your kind comments on the loss of my dear Dillinger, I am happy I could share him with so many people who get it and know that he was a "son" to me.  Life is so different now. . .  hearts break, but heal to love again. . .

Glad your guys did well within the kennel and that you've turned a poor mistreated boy into one that has learned humans can and are friends, given his earlier experiences, your love got him there!  Give him and extra pat for me.

Ask your questions, there are certainly plenty of people with answers here ;)

Hugs, Laureen
