Good Morning Everyone. It's Tuesday!
At support group I said something I have never said before. One person kept insisting that because of her busy schedule, she didn't see how she could ever follow the food plan. She thought that RNY would take the weight off without effort. Several people offered suggestions which she seemed to ignore. I finally said " maybe you should reconsider having WLS if you are going into it thinking it will work without WORK".
I don't think I said it in a mean sort of manner. Just felt guilty after letting the words escape my big mouth.
Good for you! You were saying what everyone else in the room was probably thinking.
At one of our support meetings a woman was lamenting about her doctor not helping her with a revision. Then she went on to talk about going to dinner and eating two slices of the bread with her meal. I'm sure we were all thinking that she wasn't following her eating plan. I'm also sure the doctor wouldn't agree to a revision because if she wasn't following the band rules, she wouldn't follow the RNY rules either. A few of the women in the room were brave enough to point out to her that she wasn't following the rules. She was drinking with meals, another no-no. Yet here she was in tears blaming the doctor. It was good for the rest of us to hear. She also didn't want to hear the suggestions to go back to the beginning of the program and start again with her eating. She really thought the band was supposed to do it all.
Don't feel guilty.

So often the best advice we hear at support group is how some people break every rule then blame the surgery. We learn from their no-no behavior.
We could write a book full of tales which might shock the surgeons and dietitians.
Some people manage to slip through all the testing because they lie to the professionals or perhaps to themselves. After WLS their behaviors are ghastly.
"I couldn't keep any food down except Cheetos" - was one memorable comment. We were shcoked that of all the possible good food choices she ate Cheetos. Screwy.
One person admitted that she didn't plan to give up drinking soda. Much to her dismay, she ran into the surgeon the day before surgery while she had soda in her hand. He cancelled her surgery immediately.

Nettie,
You absolutely said what needed to be said, because too many people go into this thinking that the fat will melt away and stay off without any effort. People need to understand this is not magic, but accomplished and sustained by what you do on a daily basis. Besides I doubt there is a mean bone in your body. . .
