Hi everyone,,its been a long time,,but I have a question for some of ya.
Has anyone suffered extreme heartburn since RNY? I had my surgery 5 years ago,,and the last two nights I have been awakened with extreme heartburn. How can that be? Isnt that caused by stomach acid? We dont have any do we? All I had before bed was a glass of skim milk. I had to get up and eat some tums,,quite a few before it let up. Any suggestions?

Thanks!
Betsy

Betsy:

I have had reflux since two days after surgery ... they haven't figured out why. It has gotten worse. I sometimes get reflux from water!

Hey Betsy,

No, you're not alone. Twice I have woken up in the middle of the night gasping for breath after aspirating stomach acid. Believe me, it's horrible! I think my surgeon says that about 20% of WLS pts still experience reflux. Ive been on prescription meds for a long time, and have even had upper gi and barium swallows which have shown no reason for the reflux....nice, huh?
It's only been in the last couple of weeks that I have stopped tKing the Rx, and that's because my insurance company won't pay for it. If I need something I take the over the counter proposed or previcid and it's been working.

Don't k ow if this actually helped, but maybe.

Nice to see you again...don't be such a stranger!!!

Betsy...if this is sudden onset- I would call my doc..this could be a symptom you shouldn't ignore...plus it never hurts to be on the safe side.  Just my 2cents worth ;-)
Great to see you post again!

Betsy, my pouch and other part of my stomach have suffered acid burns from all the acid that I produce.  I have never really had problems in that area until wls.  I will take meds for it the rest of my life.  If I ever want to drop a pound or two, all I have to do is quit taking the meds and the pain becomes so severe that I cannot eat or drink.  If this is new, I'd let my doctor know.  Over the counter anti acid producers like prilosec or such works just as well as the expensive ones.  Hope it's something you can get under control.

Thanks for the responses. I m making an appt with my doc on Monday. I have other issues going on too.
Suffering restless legs and arms at night,,feels like bugs crawling under the skin,,insomnia..anxiety attacks,,dont want to leave the house for anything. My family thinks its stress..since my kids moved in with Mike and I for awhile. From just the two of us to 6, and two fo these teenagers and one a six year old,,that could be. LOL. They are good kids and try to stay out of the way,,but my old routines are all messed up. Maybe thats where the anxiety is coming from.
Im on a low dose of celexa,,maybe he needs to up it a bit.
Whatever, Ill let ya all know what he says.

Blessings
Betsy
