Hi from a newbie

 I would like to say hello to all of my big sisters out there.  I just turned 50 and am thinking about having some type of surgery to get rid of all this excess weight.  Can somebody give me some pointers as to where I should start looking.  I'd really appreciate it.

Hi there and welcome to our site.  If you look at the forum menu you will see forums on different types of surgery.  I would also google bariatric surgery/your town.  Your primary care physician would also be a good source to ask about surgeons.  You could google each type of surgery and get information.  It is important to become well informed this is a big decision. 

I had the gastric by-pass Rouen-y.  It was one of two types of surgery being performed in Houston at the time.  The other was lap-band.  I knew the by-pass was right for me.  Keep posting, ask questions, and you will find support here.

I started with my primary...had a blunt heart to heart with him..got his opinion on the types of surgery available and whether he thought I would qualify under Kaiser's protocol. I would also contact your insurance company, if you have one, and see if your policy covers WLS. Also look into finding a local WLS support group in your area; check out the Forums on this site, find your state and ask there if there are support groups in your area.  Support groups are a great place to start asking questions, hearing others tell their journey, and learning about the surgeries available.
Finally, definitely keep checking out here...asking questions, check out posters profiles (you will find their stories in more detail) and looking at the other Forums...there is a lot information on Obesity Help.
