Hi Shirley,
I am Trish, and I love this board.  I have been active on the Pennsylvania board since my surgery in August of '06.  I am so grateful for the surgery, and the friends I have as a result of it.  I wish I could get motivated to get to the face to face support meetings that Laureen mentioned, as I had my surgery at the same center she did.  I need the support, but shy away from going to meetings for some reason.

I am divorced, after 25 years of marriage, for ten years now.  We are still friends, which is good, because our three grown children often visit and stay at his house, which has more room than my one bedroom apartment.  He is remarried, and his wife is very kind and friendly, which makes me feel better knowing my kids and two beautiful grandchildren will be taken care of when they come to town.

My kids all live elsewhere.  Colleen will be 35 in July, and she and her hubby live in Michigan, with my two Munchkins, Isabel who turned 4 last week, and Lincoln, who will be 2 in August.  They are in town right now, so I am in heaven.  Christopher, 33, who lives in Queens, New York, is married to an actress who is currently on tour with "Les Miserable, the National Tour."  She has been all over the country, and is currently in Los Angeles.  Sean, 28, lives in Pittsburgh, and is supposed to return to college this Fall.  He is single, living with his long time girlfriend, who I treat like a daughter when I see them.  Sean attends Pitt.

After my divorce, I went back to school to earn a Masters in Social Work, because my first love has always been the mental health field.  At one point in time, I worked part time at a psychiatric hospital doing group therapy, on weekends and during the summer.  I taught in Philadelphia for 18 years, before retiring on Disability in October.  I recently started working again, at the hospital, only this time as a per diem social worker.  I will be filling in for the regular social workers at different times.  I can work for nine months while on Social Security Disability as part of a return to work program.

I come from a family with two brothers, now in heaven, and one sister.  Sis had lap band surgery a year ago, but did not get into the regular exercise, or following a weight loss surgery diet, so her weight loss has barely been noticeable.

I have been dealing with chronic pain issues, mainly from pinched nerves, so I have been limited in my exercise.  I am also a recovering alcoholic, and had a two year relapse that started one year out from surgery, and regained about 35 of the 100 pounds I originally lost.  I now have 17 months sober, and attend AA regularly.

Finally, I have a furbaby in the form of a 3 year old Shiba Inu who definitely thinks he is my child.  He is spoiled and loves to play fetch and take walks with me.

Sorry to babble so long.  I love my family, and love to brag on them and get carried away sometimes.

Hugs,
Trish

Welcome Shirley,

I think that I am a little over three years out myself.  I think you will like being here.  I am a lurker and rarely post.  I am one of those people that had some pretty serious complications from the surgery starting in the recovery room, but I would still do it all again.  The best thing that has occured from my surgery is normalacy.  I cannot stress that enough.
