Is this a menopause thing, or the kids growing up???

So I almost brought home a new kitten today.  It's kitten season and the Humane Society is having a special, buy one get one.  I have a wonderful 12 1/2 year old lab and a 1 year old queen of the work cat, yet...  My older son is a junior in college and spends the summer in summer school so is only home for a week at a time every few months, and my younger son will be a senior in High School this fall, so only one more year to college.  And I can't stop looking at all the dogs at the Humane Society online, and rescue dogs.  But I wouldn't get another dog because my lab wouldn't understand (he's very needy and a people dog, and has athritis and if we got another dog, they would play and he would be in just too much pain).  So I went to look at the kittens and of course, fell in love.  Is this burning desire to get another pet/puppy or kitten because my kids are growing up and leaving home?  Or since I am in the midst of perimenopause and my emotions are totally all over the place?  This has been building up for months, so it's not that recent, but the urge to get a new pet is getting stronger every day.  And we already have two and a busy life, so do we or don't we?

Any opinions would be welcome.
Thanks.

Hi Jan,
What you are describing could be symptomatic of perimenopause.  When I first began my journey through perimenopause, I started volunteering in my church's nursey to help out during the Sunday School hour.  I basically was in there every Sunday.  It helped me get my baby fix.

My best suggestion, instead of getting a new pet, would be to volunteer at an animal shelter, or children's ministry at your church.  If you don't work, see about getting a job at a daycare center or school.  Helping in the nursery gave me my weekly baby fix, which helped me deal with my need to nurture.

Hugs,
Trish

Jan....sounds like it could be a little of both. Don't do anything on impulse. Really weigh the pros and cons.

Sounds like you have enough going on. Ride out the sorm!!

Good Luck!!

Jan, you are the only to make that decision. Give it a few days & think about it. I can't even go into a pet store or rescue center, I want to bring them all home.

By the way I went through menapause 10 years ago. Also have 4 dogs & a cat.

 Hi Jan,
I know how you feel. My husband told me NO MORE PETS ! This was after my cat "tigger" passed and a month later my dog " Duncan" passed. Which left us with one cat Zip ( I call her my fat cat) she is about 15 years old.  So one October day I pulled out my camera and decided to take pictures. I like to hit the back roads so I headed out. I came across this parking lot and looked out and saw this little dog running across the lot. Skinny little thing. I called " here puppy" and she ran right to me. Nothing but skin and bones so I scooped her up put her in the car .Took her home and said to my husband " Look what I found !"  Checked the local shelter, vets, police station  checked to see if she had been chipped but nothing. My daughter's friend who works at the local 911 call center said someone called in and said a dog was tied to a poll near where I found her.

Hubby fell in love with "Missy" that is HIS BABY GIRL , I always said I didn't want a chichauaua because they were small and "yappy"  Missy has changed my mind....I WANT ANOTHER ONE !

A week after I found Missy , a couple of paramedics found another chichauaua in the same area .
Last week my son in law went to someone's house to do some work and he brought home an "addition"  to thier family....His name is Buddy....

So your family continues to expand...the four legged kind... LOL

Hi Jan,

I lost all 3 of my elderly dogs in 1 year. We got a cat not long afterward. We can't get another dog as I can't afford food and vet bills, Etc. Also our cat is very neurotic and does not tolerate other animals. He is terrified.
I'm single so I get my dog fix by pet sitting at people's homes. Not everyone can do that. Volunteering at a no kill shelter is a good thing for both people and animals. I want to bring them all home too, but must remember daily that it is impossible for me at this time.
