wls after 50
I am 57 and have a appointment with a surgeon on Oct 22. I start orientation on Oct 3rd at the center . I am a little scared because of my age but have no choice but to have the surgery because my weight has been caused health problems. Bad knees and back. My ortho will not do knee replacements until I loose the weight. I have tried weigh****chers for 15 years playing with the same 50 lbs. I have atleast 150 to loose. Anyone experience wls after 50
Welcome to OFF (over fifties forum)!!!
You do not need to worry about your age. You will be fine.
Having RNY surgery was the best thing I ever did for myself!! My only regret was I didn't do it sooner.
Follow you doctors directions and all will be fine. This is NOT the easy way out. Maintaining is tough at times. We all have our ups and downs. However, this forum is the absolute best for support, encouragement, kindness and caring. I hope you stick around. Ask any questions at anytime. We are here to help each other no matter what!

Hello!
I am 55 and had the surgery when I was 54. It is never too late to get healthy! My knees used to hurt me all the time, but not anymore. You will be so happy you had the surgery. You will regain your mobility and better health overall. Like Connie said, this is not an "easy fix". You do have to work at it, stay compliant with the rules, and watch what you eat. However, as a tool, WLS is great and if you're willing to work with it, you can have terrific results.
This is a great forum and you will find lots of wisdom, advice, and compassion here. Keep posting and let us get to know you.

I am really excited to get this journey started. I thought I wanted just the sleeve but I am pretty sure I want the RYn surgery. Like any weight loss I know you have to work at it. I know this is a tool not a easy fix and I am good with that. Right now however I am out of control with eating with not being on any plan after being with ww so long I seem to just be grazing all day long. I know the more weight I put on the worse it is for me. I wish my appointment was tomorrow but don't actually see the doctor until Oct 22nd. Going on vacation next week and hopefully will try to stay somewhat in control. Iam fine when I am home, it is at work I seem to have the problem with. I sit at a computer all day and it is hard to not graze. This is something I really struggle with and hope consuling will help. I definately plan on sticking around on the boards. Thanks for everyones help with is journey

Hi Deb and welcome! I'm 51 years old and scheduled to have my surgery on Monday, 9/17 - So far, I can say I have almost completed the two week pre-op diet and been doing everything my surgeon has told me to - so far, I don't regret a minute of my decision.
I've not had weight issues for very long - just the past year really - I gained 100 pounds when I got very ill and started taking steroids to treat my illness - between the steroids and not being able to exercise I'm a mess!
I never thought I would have to make this decision in my lifetime - but I'm very fortunate to have a great surgeon and great support here at OFF!
Best of luck to you on your journey!

Hi Deb,
I had my surgery in my late 40's, but as you can see, there are plenty who have had it in their 50's. This is the best decision I have made, short of getting sober. Two suggestions to help with the emotional/behavioral aspect of overeating, get into therapy to learn coping skills for when the urge to eat is bothering, and check out Overeaters Anonymous. Both help me to change my thinking where food is concerned.
You will find this is the friendliest site on OH. No question is too stupid to ask. We have all been where you are, so we have probably asked it as well.
Hugs,
Trish
