OhhhhGosh Lisa! I don't know about that BLOOD SAUGAGE thingy? Ay, ay, ay!!!
I'll still with LIVER and Pinto beans.

But I'm so happy that you are good to go for your surgery.

I will not be having surgery tomorrow but I will be next Thursday. It gives me some time to OD on all this good stuff. YUK!

Go to Walgreens and find Bifera.  Its an iron that we absorb well.  Start taking it now!  Its hefty enough it doesn't mind a little calcium getting in the way.  My iron was low and that's what I was recommended until my Heme iron from Vitalady comes in.  I've been taking it a week and have noticed I'm not as tired as I usually am....

It won't hurt...

Get some Organic Black Strap Molasses (not the regular molasses you bake with HAS TO BE black strap).  This has one of the highest iron counts out there.  Take 2 tbls every day.  I did this when my iron was low...build me up really quickly.  I took 1 tbls in morning and 1 tbls in late afternoon.  Strong taste but worth taking.

I'm sure you are disappointed.  I had to postpone my plastics that were scheduled and paid for last July because of something that suddenly popped up in a routine medical exam.  I ended up having surgery in Sept so I fully understand your frustration and disappointment but trust me, it's better to have surgery being at your healthiest possible...you'll need to be strong during recovery.

Keep us posted.
Best wishes!

PS- I buy the molasses at my local supermarket

Before adding an OTC supplement, I would say ask your doctor about that.  I would go with increasing the iron rich food part.  Also, look carefully at what you're eating an hour before and after you take the supplement or iron rich food.  Are you eating anything that would inhibit the absorption?

So true Lisa!

I'm so scared on eating anything right now because I'm scared that the iron is not going to be aborbed properly.

I could've have been at the hospital right now if it wasn't for my brilliant doctor. When me too.... It sucks having this IRON thingy.

Whaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaaa!

Sorry for your problems. The surgery is a big stress on your body, and you need to be in the best shape for it !

Anemia after WLS of any type (incuding the band) can be very difficult to treat.  I start months ahead of time if possible, and at least identify those individuals in whom I need to get to work on by drawing labs when we first meet.

They type of anemia is important to figure out, and once that is done the best treatment is prescribed.  There are several ways to do iron supplmentation, for example.

Occasionally, I will have  a patient with a very resistent anemia that no matter what we do is still a issue.  After "fixing the fixables" we will go ahead with surgery with the understanding that a transfusion may be more likely.

Individuals who are well-conditioned (i.e. cardio fitness, spin class, runners, etc)  tolerate anemia much better than couch-potatoes, so a conditioning program can go a long way in individuals with anemia.

The key is to NOT have any surprises the day before, or worse, after surgery !

Wow - what an interesting fact.  I have celiac disease and as a result have been anemic for years now.  I'm not a couch-potato (exactly), but I sure could use a LOT more exercise than I get now.  That just might be an incentive for me.  Thanks!

Thank You DRL.

My primary doctor did call in for and Iron prescription. Its Ferrous Sulfate 325mg tablets.

Instead of 1 tablet the doctor told me to take 3 times a day.

I hope this helps me for next Thursday surgery day.

If you are taking ferrous sulfate, your iron will never move.  In order to absorb any ferrous irons, you need an acidic stomach and after an RNY, we dont' have an acidic stomach anymore and if you are on a PPI, it is even worse.  Please switch your iron to carbonyl or heme, they are the only types you will absorb.
