Drain Site Irritation

How are you keeping your drain site from getting red and irritable?  Mine had been doing really good until yesterday.  Today it is red and sore around the outer edge.  I guess to much movement yesterday.

Are you keeping a gauze pad around it? mine got really purple after about 2 weeks then he took it out, he said it can get infected if in to long. How long has it been? is it still putting out drainage? I am still dealling with fluid buildup on my right side, cant seem to get it to absorb and my drains have been out for 2 weeks already, very frustrating.

Hang in there! After my JP drains came out, I gained 7 pounds in fluid overnight and it took at least 6 weeks for me to be rid of that fluid.  Also, after my wound VAC came off, I again put on fluid weight (2-3 pounds) overnight.  That took about 3 weeks to resolve.

Are you putting bacitracin or neosporin around it? I started off putting neosporin around the drain sites until I realized I was allergic. Bacitracin worked fine though.

I talked with my doctor and he said that I could put neosporin sparingly around the site but not to get any in the opening.  My drain has been in for two weeks but I am still putting out about 60 cc's of fluid every 24 hours.  He will not remove until it is half of that.  He said it would be in at least another week.  He would rather deal with irritation of the drain site than to deal with the possibility of seromas.

Tess I'm right there with you. I'm two weeks out and I have one drain left and it is still outputting a lot of fluid every day. The nurse said that I have to get down to under 30 ccs for 3 consecutive days. I will say the color has finally progressed to a clearer color, but it has yet to slow down.

So the incision pain comes and goes. When I had both it hurt more than it does now. I just keep some slack for the drain tube within my underwear so it doesn't move around to much.

Do you think that because you are feeling ok and moving around a lot that that is the reason your draining is still outputting so much? I'm really trying to figure this out so I can get rid of this drain and start driving and what not.

Can't help ya, my surgeon does not use drains.  He uses harmonic scalpels to avoid the use of drains.

When I had a feeding tube it got very irritated.  The visiting nurse had me put calmoseptine ointment around it.  It is kinda like desitin, but better.  Most drugstores carry it.

I may have had a few extra potholes along the way, but the journey has been good!
