I'm thinking about using a scar cream to help reduce the appearance of scars.  I heard about Mederma.  Does it work well?  What did you use?

My doctor recommended Kelo Cote strips.  I heard they were hard to deal with so I ordered the KeloCote gel.  It's too soon to tell how it's working but it's pretty easy to use.

I use 100% pure coconut oil. The same stuff you can eat. Solid at room temp.
just scoop it out rub your hands together and whala...

You can see my pictures on my photos page. My scars are looking
really good so...

I really didnt want to put something on my skin that I wouldn't eat.
I am really weird about that sort of stuff.

I'm assuming you buy this coconut oil in a grocery store. I've heard of it but never seen it.

I get mine at Kroger or the Vitamin Shoppe. You can also get it
on Amazon
It is also great for cooking!

How soon after surgery did you start treating the scars?

I get it at Kroger or The vitamin shoppe. Who ever has the sale price
at the time I am out.

I started after two weeks and my wounds were closed. I started only
1 inch from the insision line. I did not apply directly on to the insision until
the 3rd week.  But once again I made sure not to apply to an open area.

I have heard of people using the following: vitamin E oil, micropore tape, silicone strips, bio oil. I have a bottle of bio oil sitting in my bathroom that I haven't used yet. My roommate has been using it on her stretch marks and it has actually helped lighten them up a little. I'm not sure if it's the oil or if it's the act of massaging them. I am wary of using stuff on my incisions because my skin is so danged sensitive, I'm allergic to adhesives and get rashes from perfumes and scents. So I have done absolutely nothing to the scars on my TT and breasts. They have turned out pretty well, and are still lightening up. I may use coconut oil on my arm incisions to help even out the bumpiness, I have used that on my legs as a moisturizer and I know it doesn't cause problems. But I'm not going to be pushing/pulling/rubbing on the incisions until they're more healed, I don't want to cause them to widen. I'm about a month out. Will probably wait another month.

The best thing you can do is keep your scars out of direct sun. Sunscreen will not substitute, you need to keep em covered by clothing. Sun exposure will definitely cause them to end up darker.

This is probably obvious to others, but not me.. anyway, I used mederma for a bit and it was taking off layers of my skin.. I guess thats how it works? but I was using it on scars on my arm, and when I came into work, my arm was all patchy and discolored and flaky.. it was disgusing, I would not recommend it!!

I tried mederma a long time ago - I forget what for - but it seemed pretty useless.  At the time I believe I had better luck with vitamins e.  recently I have been using kelo-cote on my scars and they are looking wonderful.  It is pricey but I feel it is worth it.
