Up FIVE pounds in four days-- science types, chime in!

It's never happened to me, but it's happened to everyone else, so I thought maybe I could use myself as an example to give our science types a chance to explain things to everyone. (The smiley is because I actually expected it. Been here long enough to know how it works!)

My "lost weekend" netted me a 5 pound weight gain in four days. I know, people fluctuate up and down, but since I never have before, I'm gonna attribute this to the crazy weekend and not some meterological event or act of God.

We all know that to gain four pounds of real weight I'd have had to eat 3500 more calories a day than I normally do to maintain-- and while I had my fun, I don't think I even hit 2500 on any given day, let alone the 5500 it would have taken to gain five real honest-to-goodness pounds.

Anyone want to take a shot at explaining this phenomenon? I figure it might be helpful for people to hear how it happens.

(Added note: my legs and ankles are huge today.)

I know what you mean.........
I had popcorn (very salty) at the football last Friday and Saturday my rigns were SOOOOOOOOOOO tight and my hands realy hurt.
For me it has a lot to do with how much salt I eat.

There ya go Shari,  water weight!  Anytime you can visibly see the change in your extremities you will see a fairly large jump in the scale.  It is just like gaining weight when having surgery.  Fluids weigh just like everything else.  I hate it!   lol

But the science question is "Where did the fluids come from?" I didn't drink more or less than I usually do...do aliens put fluids in us while we sleep?

(Note: I kinda know the answers to this, I just really want a brainiac to step in and explain for everyone's benefit.  ;)

It has to be Aliens!      I would like to see scientific reply as well.  But I do want to add, that there is a full moon and the lunar pull makes me retain water as well as feeling like going postal over automated phone systems that I dealt with all day yesterday.

But the other thing, is you have been traveling and sitting in trains, planes and automobiles will also bring on the water weight.

It has to be aliens I really can't think of any good excuses after the salt!  lol

I suspect that eating "off target" tends to mean our sodium levels are also higher than they typically are. As such, they increase our fluid retention and throw our fluids totally out of whack...that would explain the weight and the puffiness.

I read your post the other day and looks like you had loads of fun....Lots of cheese lots of sodium.  High sodium levels/water rentention.

Shoot I could look at a pizza and gain 5lbs and that's no joke. So I'm going to have my eye balls taken out next week

It makes me wonder if more sodium causes the body to "think" it is depleting in fluids and holds on to it ....kind of like when you don't eat enough calories and your body holds on to the fat. Whenever I eat more foods with higher sodium content.... I try to drink 2 or 3 more glasses of fluid to try and flush the additional fluid buildup.  Ok so I do not have the science lingo perfected...but am I close?  LOL
Hope all are having a great day!
