I have just emailed my dietician about it but I was wondering if I could eat bread or whole grains when I start the soft diet next week.

No way. (at least in my opinion)

Your focus should be protein, protein, protein. Bread (whole grain, low carb) comes much later. If for no other reason than it will/can cause you discomfort. Just incase need protein wasn't enough.

I second what Morgan said.  Bread tends to expand in your tummy, and this early out you certainly don't want to put any undue stress on the suture/staple lines.  Most people aren't allowed to have bread until MUCH later down the road, like even 6 months in some cases... and most NUTs will advise against eating it soft.  Most suggest toasting it.... but again, that's not until you are much further along than you are now.  Good luck...

Bread is not soft to your system. It requires a lot to be able to digest. When you are cleared for bread (and it might be a minute), it usually goes down best as toast as a matter of fact.

But with so little going into your pouch, bread is one of the last things you should be thinking about right about now. Cottage cheese, yogurt, soft fishes, etc. These are good go-to choices for a soft food stage because they have LOTS of protein in them.

Bread has a bit but not nearly enough to make it worth your valuable pouch space for a while to come.

It was allowed on my soft diet but I would not recommend it.  You can eat such small amounts of food right now, you need to focus on protein.  If you choose to eat bread, eat it in very small amounts.

I would say mostly no, just like everyone else.  I was allowed what my nut called 'crispy foods' on the soft foods diet, which basically came down to well-toasted bread or melba toast.  It was also only allowed if you had it with your protein only, basically just if you couldn't take another meal of tuna salad unless you had a bit of toast with it.  It was also limited to half a slice of toast or two slices of melba toast a day.

I only tried it once or twice, because it took up space and didn't really sit as well as I was hoping.  I gave up and waited until later.

Not on my plan at all.  For all the reasons already posted.  I'm six months as of two weeks ago and I still haven't tried any.

Add me to the "not a good idea" contingent.  It was NOT on my surgeon's list of soft foods and is  often a source of pouch discomfort.
