I recently had the gastric sleeve and my wife is contemplating the RNY. I and many others with the sleeve have terrible heart burn. Wife wants to know if the RNY causes heartburn.

I have heard that the RNY cures GERD. I am hoping so.

That's why I chose to have RNY....
Although I still have some bouts of heartburn, but no where as bad as before RNY.. We still have to take acid reducers for bout 6 months to prevent ulcers.
I was warned about the heartburn being much worse after VSG, it was my choice to make.  I did hear of people being cured.
Good luck to your wife...

RNY does not prevent ulcers, if anything it creates a more 'ulcer friendly environment'.  I don't know about you, but my surgeon put me on a PPI for life!
I'm currently  being treated for an ulcer and have NEVER had a history of them prior to RNY.
I had GERD-basically due to my previous large girth mixed with  a hiatal hernia preop.

Keep researching to get to know all the facts!

Nobody said anything about RNY preventing ulcers....

I had really bad GERD (acid reflux) before surgery.  I have a floppy valve (from esophagus to stomach) too.  My surgeon and my GI doctor both said the GERD would go away with the proximal RNY gastric bypass. The reason they said is that the part of the stomach that produces acid is no longer part of my food digestion path.   As of day of surgery I have not had to take my GERD medication.  I do a little pain that I would classify as heartburn or maybe it is too much air swallowed.  Or maybe it would be more accurate to say gas.

Not all RNY patients are given acid reflux medication after surgery.

i also had a hiatal hernia prior that was repaired during my bypass surgery. The surgeon thought this may have contributed to my gerd along with my excess weight. My surgery was only three weeks ago and I have already noticed much less heartburn than before. I hope to get off the prilosec forever. That stuff isn't the best medication to take long term.

Some people do think that RNY can prevent ulcers, partly because some surgeons cut the acid producing nerve to the new pouch *a Vagotomy* and some don't....

I had RNY last February due to the damage caused by GERD. I now have Barrett's Esophagus, which is a pre-curser to esophageal cancer, so . . . RNY was the answer to GERD. I took Prevacid for 6 weeks after, and that is it.

I don't have heartburn. The only discomfort that I have, is when I lay down too soon after eating, and the food that is still in the pouch mimicks the pain of gastric reflux.

So Blessed!

If I lie down too soon after eating my food tries to flow back up my esophagus.  It doesn't actually hurt, but it's an unsettling sensation.
