My surgery numbers in cm...am I doomed to fail

O.k., I looked at my report that was sent with me to take back to the U.S. and when I first read it, I didnt think everything was as it should be....For anybody who is knowledgable and informed I would really like your opinion. Remember this is from a Spanish doctor that was so-so at English, here's what he wrote:
gastric pouch 50cc---isnt this supposed to be 30cc?
biliary bowel 80cm of treitz
alimentary bowel to 250cm
common channel 250cm
WTF? The pouch is supposed to be 1/2 to 1 once and approx 30cc not 50cc!! There are studies that clearly state that larger pouches have a less significant weight loss. No friggin' wonder I can drink normal and eat fine. The others I have been looking up too, but I want to know what you all have to say about all this. Was my surgery just setting me up to not lose the way a "normal" person would? I feel like crying right now. Any help?

My operative report after the RNY also said 50cc for the pouch. My surgery was done in NYC by a very skilled and highly regarded surgeon at a top of the line hospital. I can barely eat 1/2 cup of food and can't really drink all I want or need to. Pouches should be between 30-50cc so we are both just fine. 50cc equals about 1.6 oz. I'm not worried at all.

I'm still new at this but I was told there are 2 sizes to the Stoma so maybe if that isn't stretched by eating and drinking and not chewing and a few other things you may still be OK.  I'm anxious for others that know more to answer this!!

50 cc seems to be more common now than it was 6 years ago.  I had a 30 cc pouch, 80 cm bypass and have done well.  I don't recall the alimentary or common channel.  I need to pull out my surgery report again.

Don't stress the size of the pouch, 1/2 oz difference isn't going to deter your weight loss.  Once you go to solids you will definitely feel restriction and as long as you don't push your intake I think you'll be fine.

Thanks for answering, I feel a little better now, because you started out at about the same weight as I, and you have done wonderful, obviously!! If you have a 50cc pouch and 80 bypassed I guess it will work for me, maybe....I have been extremely resistant to any weight loss my entire life and have been severly obese my whole life. I wanted my surgery to be more medial or even close to distal because of this, but at least you have given me some hope. Thanks again.

To be honest with you, I have no idea what size my pouch is, but I could drink like a normal human from the very beginnning, andd you know how successful I am! I do know that the amount bypassed (don't know what number that would be above) is 200 cm, which is a lot more aggressive than most (and more aggressive than I ultimately needed)

I've read studies that show the size of the pouch (especially in this instance) is not the big deal.... in the end the pouch and bypassed intestines are TOOLS ..... tools to help YOU to change your behavior. By themselves they have very little ultimate effect..... if you do not learn new behaviors you won't be successful

Now you have knowlege..... you need to work with that knowlege to make the surgery you HAVE A success.

my pouch was 20 ML pouch at surgery but I was a revision.  and my hospital records say that 60 cm roux limb was created.  I would call back to surgical office in Mexico and get them to clarify.

50 cc is a normal size pouch and many surgeons use that as their guideline when doing surgery. Check with a doc here to see what the norm is for his patients. Part of re-learning how to eat when we're post op is controlling portions and intake. Just because you can fit in more, doesn't mean you should. Measure out your food sizes if you need to - I was on 3 ounces per meal when I was a newbie. I'm 9 yrs out and still find it hard to eat a whole cup of yogurt without being full. The secret is not overstretching your pouch, and it will always be restrictive for us.
good luck to you - check other members of your local support group and the other forums on here for info.

I do follow all of my surgeons rules, which are all the same as some of others. I weigh my food, check volume, no empty calories, very low fat and carbs, I've just graduated to soft foods a few days ago. When I was talking about the foods, I didnt mean I was eating the amount I want and not getting sick. I am following all the rules and intend to for the rest of my life. I know that the surgery isnt going to magically make the weight disappear by itself. I just want the surgery to give me the optimum amount of help that is possible, because of my history of being sooo resistant to weight loss. Being morbidly obese since 4th or 5th grade will make you a little crazy!!!
