New Whey protein shots

I opened up my OH Newletter this evening and saw an ad for New Whey protein shots offering 42 g protein.  From all my reading on the boards and otherwise, I understand that these types of things are not "liquid gold" for bariatric patients like they say on their site, so...please discuss.

I don't do protein bars (mostly because they seem to come in only peanut butter or chocolate and the very thought makes me gag--I did try one that was supposed to be a toffee crunch bar that neither tasted like toffee nor crunched.  That's about when I wrote bars off altogether) so any supplementation I do with my meal proteins is protein powder I've added to my coffee or NSA hot chocolate.  I have a feeling though when my labs come back next week (I'm getting them drawn tomorrow) that my protein will be lacking, so I will need to give it a boost.

The New Whey shots are mostly collagen protein, with just a little whey thrown in.  You'll absorb the whey in it but not the collagen because it does not have all the amino acids we need.

In addition, the collagen protein comes from boiled horse and cow skin.  Seriously.

Have you tried Luna protein bars?  Or the Atkins Daybreak bars?  Those are my two favorites.  Even my partner likes the Atkins cranberry almond - I have to hide them if I want a box to last more than a day around here.

I figured they were like all the other protein shots.  I'll save my money.  I haven't tried the Luna bars and something named cranberry almond sounds like something I'd like!  I'll venture down the protein bar aisle again and check those out.  Thanks Kelly!

My favorite Luna is the lemon zest.  The cranberry almond is by Atkins and I think it tastes a lot like a chewy granola bar.  Atkins also has an apple crisp that is really good.  I like chocolate ones too but get tired of them after a while.

Apple crisp sounds good too.  I wish they were really crunchy instead of chewy though.  I still plan to use them sparingly but I know I need to do SOMETHING to get the protein up in my daily diet.

When I was low in protein, my surgeon suggested that I take two drinks of protein shakes a day. That was at my six month check up. I have been fine ever since.
I love Jay Robb's Tropical Dreamsicle. I buy the individual packages for trips. It helps that it mixes well with water. I would fill the container with water from the sink in the bed and breakfast. You need to shake and shake it. While my roommate was getting ready, I would drink it and take my vitamins. This way, I was ready for the day and our adventures in Paris, London, Venice, Florence, Rome and Munich.

At home, driving to work or church on Sundays, I got the boost that I needed to last until lunch time. I also get a RTD protein that comes in cans. Pure Protein is good. It has a good taste.

My thoughts on protein bars is that they remind me of candy. I tried Larabars in 2008 right after surgery. It had too much sugar for my needs. I was going on a mission trip with teenagers and stockiling protein sources for them. One woman brough Jerky, which went over well for the kids. I tried it but felt that I would not be able to consistently eat it. I found that salt tends to make me feel bloated. Yes, even now.

I do not like granola bars because of the fact they stick in my molars! If I need a protein bar, I get Oh Yeah bars. The kind that are wafers. This is something I also pack. It helps when you are traveling because you cannot bring liquids through the security. I bring an empty shaker bottle and fill it up with water once through security.

I am going to the WLSFA Meet and Greet in Las Vegas in the middle of May. I will pack my Jay Robb and my Oh Yeah. I just need to head on over to Vitamin Shoppe to buy some.

I went to GNC one afternoon and the clerk in there was a body builder delux.  He told me that anything over 25-30 grams of protein was not absorbed.  So since I talked to him, I have been trying to stick to things that contain about this amount of protein.  I like Unjury.

I guess Ill throw away the $30.00 worth of useless Whey Protein shots I purchased before surgery.  What a waste!  I was going to drink them and get a little protein out of them until the gal said how they are made, wish I didnt read that part.

I threw some out that I had purchased before surgery, too.  I hated to be so wasteful, but taking in all those calories for VERY little protein was just not acceptable!
