WAY OT - New Orleans Travel Tips?

I'll be heading to N.O. on Saturday.... any travel tips?  What must I see or do there?  The girls have planned a few things -- zoo, casino, French Qtr., voodoo tour, a couple specialty restaurants.  As someone who doesn't gamble or eat much, I'm concerned that I won't have much to do.

Suggestions?  Thanks!

I have been to New  Orleans a few time.  A couple pre-RNY and once post RNY (as a matter of fact it was my first trip).  I found eating there very difficult.  Thank God I found a grocery store with lactaid and had packed a lot of protein and bars.  Most things were too spicy or too greasy to agree.  There is a mexican restraunt near the riverwalk (down from Coyote Ugly) - sorry I can't remember the name, but I could get some grilled chicken there and it was pretty good!
As far as things to do, the zoo is great.  The aquarium is also pretty neat.  I would recommend a horse drawn carraige through the french quarter (they have some fun insights) and will also give you some ideas of places to go.  I was there for a conference so I didn't have a lot of spare time.
I am not from a big city, but found a great store called Buffalo Exchange (kinda like goodwill, but much nicer clothes)!

I absolutely LOVE New Orleans.  You've got to go to the French Market and shop.  I'm not into it but the French Quarter has interesting voodoo shops.  Very interesting to see a whole different life stye.  Find you a restaurant down an alley in the French Quarter, they are by far the best and most like the culture there.  You can go to Margaritaville or somewhere like that, but that's food you can get anywhere.  Just be careful which alley you choose! LOL  You should go to Pat O'Briens for the piano bar.  Fun and have a hurricane or two.  Not sure how old your girls are but if you go to Bourbon Street, go to The Cat's Meow.  It's karoke and by midnight the crowd is pretty wild, but sooo funny!  Tons of fun!  Just went down there for 3 days in November.  Never been to the casinos...way too much other stuff to do!!  Have fun...so jealous!!!

I'm from Nawlins...and still love to go and visit.

Must do's:

The Famous Door on Bourbon-oldes live music venue-usually great jazz
Cafe Du Monde-must have a beignet--DON'T INHALE WHILE EATING IT!! (trust me on this one)
The Audubon Zoo and Audubon Park
The Botanical Gardens
Ride the streetcar from end to end--the Garden District is lovely and there are many beautiful homes
Magazine Street-awesome cafes and boutiques
The French Market-great vendors selling everything you didn't even know you wanted!
Tour the Cabildo and St. Louis Cathedral
Get a Muffelatta at Central Grocery
ANY Restaurant will have several options you can eat that are not spicy--many grilled/blackened fish/seafood options everywhere--if you do not like/tolerate spicy, ask them to leave the hot pepper off of it.

Most importantly---and most tourists don't know this--wear fully closed shoes that are comfortable and that you don't mind ruining.....the Quarter is nasty--you will step in things YOU DO NOT want to identify!  Also, if you carry a purse, make sure it is very small and wear it on your front.  USE SUNSCREEN AND WEAR A HAT/VISOR.

Have fun!!

just went to NOLA in March it is AMAZING!  Lots of walking, the riverwalk is beautiful.  I recommend doing a cemetery tour and taking a trolley car through the garden district.  Be careful because lots of food there is fried BUT found several healthy options including peel & eat shrimp, grilled oysters (YUM), and if you are adventureous boiled crawfish, think of them as mini-lobster.  DH also had WLS and we found that the portions were so generous every place we went that we shared a plate and still had more than we could eat.  Several places even devided the meal in the kitchen and served on separate plates without even being asked.  Specificly, we really enjoyed 424 seafood on Bourbon St., Bubba Gump Shrimp Co., NOLA, and Desire Oyster Bar.

Other tips:  take a cross body bag, be careful where you step the sidewalks have lots of holes and are uneven.  If you enjoy people-watching be sure to ask for a table that opens onto the sidewalk.

OH and if you can, go to Preservation Hall, the birthplace of Jazz!  There is a line several blocks long to get in every night.  Fantastic music!  The street performers are fun too!
