Alternative to whey...no dairy!

Well at five weeks out I am not able to tolerate any dairy...zero! Since whey is derived from milk I just can't handle it. This afternoon I had literally four sips of Isopure's RTD orange drink today and I was sick for over an hour. I'm at a loss. What are my alternatives to whey powder for shakes? Soy or egg white protein powder mixed w/ water? I have yet to try soy milk...is that non-dairy? I'm not getting enough protein...I will call the NUT Monday...but any ideas 'til then? Thanks! BTW, I am still on pureed foods, so I am limited.

Almond and soy milk are both non dairy and I believe actually have more protein the cow's milk.  You have to make sure you get the ones without sugar added though.  A lot of them have sugar, so be careful.

Thank you!  So when I see sugars in Soy or Almond milk they are not the natural sugars that are in normal milk (I believe 8 oz of regular milk has 12g sugar - but natural and no worries of dumping) - these are true sugars?  Thanks again!

I found plain, unflavored, unsugared soy milk in the baking section of my Super Walmart.  It works really well in the shakes as it doesn't foam up like milk does:)  The flavored ones in the dairy fridge are the ones you have to worry about.

Good luck to you.  I had an aversion to the protein shakes until a few weeks ago...so maybe your insides will change and allow you to drink milk again in the near future...ya never know:)

Isopure protein powders are lactose free.  I've used the low carb dutch chocolate since my surgery.

Jay Robb makes an egg white protein powder that is not bad. Worth trying because you can buy small sample sized packets at GNC or Whole Foods.

Check out this website to get an idea of their products...

Women are cautioned concerning soy products so educate yourself and do what you feel is right for you.  I have been drinking soy since I was a child and most recently started drinking almond and coconut milk.  I love ice cream but pretty much never drink cow's milk.  Whole Foods has their own line (365) and carries some of the other alternatives too.  Plus much of these products can be bought in cartons that do not have to be refridgerated until opened.  Plus there is rice, hemp, etc.  The Almond Breeze products are good too (IMHO.)  Silk,Almond Breeze and Whole Foods have unsweetened versions!!!!
Another thing you can add to help with the protein content is PB2.  We bought it when my partner had her surgery.  Great way to make some different flavors and such.

Almost forgot...  There is every protein imaginable out there too.  Soy, rice, vegan, hemp, etc.
Here is one you probably haven't heard about...

And two more articles and I will let you sort it all out!!!

Ok digging around to help you I uncovered this yellow pea protein and learned somethng new!!!!

Hope this helps cause you really need to get the protein in.  I know my partner had no problems with hair loss until she started slacking on her protein intake.

Hang in there!!!

Did you try whey concentrate or isolate?

Isolate has lactose removed so if you are lactose intolerant that should work. You could also be intolerant to whey itself (which isn't necessarily related to overall dairy intolerance).

There are a lot of options. There's soy protein, egg white protein to name a few. You might make a trip to Vitamin Shoppe and explain your situation. The staff is very knowledgeable.

Thank you all so much for the information and replies! It seems that all dairy is out of the question for me at this point...who knew that even lactose free items still are dairy!! Boy, the things we learn after surgery!

I will definitely check out those different types of protein...i have only used whey isolate to this point. There has to be something that I can tolerate...even one shake a day and I can try to get the rest from food. I just keep telling myself this will all be worth it in the end, while I mourn my ability to eat one of my favorite foods...cheese.

Thanks again everyone!
