Has anyone else researched this?

Today I had a bag of baked Doritos.  I have trained myself to look at the sugar carbs in food.  This only had 2 grams.  It also had 2 grams of dietary fiber.  After I at the bag, I noticed that the total carbs was 26 grams.

So what kind of carbs were the other 22grams?  Anyone know what it is they don't list?

Thanks in advance for the info!

UPDATE******

I found that these extra carbs may be starches?  And starches can cause dumping...which is probably why I started feeling queasy and cold!

It's not required for them to put Starch Carbs on the label.  HMPH:(

the carbs in the corn ...... complex carbs..... it's like the carbs in bread or tortillas etc.

Carbs themselves are not inherently evil, but when you consume them they are more fully utilized, no malabsorption etc.

And yeah, the carbs are just everything other than sugars, fat, and protein.... lots of foods have carbs.

Um... the carbs are primarily from the corn they are made from!  It si the very first ingredient in the Ingredients list.  Sugar is just ONE kind of carb...

This is a joke right?  You just had surgery and you are eating Doritos?

I had surgery 3 months ago.  I've been released to eat anything, as long as the "bad" stuff is in moderation.

So yes...I ate Doritos.  I was out and decided to let myself have a treat after reading the nutritional information.

I was asking a simple question about additional carbs that weren't listed separately on the package and what they might consist of and if they may be as bad as the sugar carbs listed.  I was not asking for someone to judge me about eating an indulgent snack...thank you very much!

I knew we had to watch the sugar carbs and where THEY were coming from.  I just started to find that the sugar and dietary fiber carbs don't add up to the total carbs.  I didn't know that I needed to worry about them...now I will start to look at that as well:)

Thanks ladies for your info!!!  I knew I could count on the site veterans to get me through it!

I wasn't judging you.  I was just very surprised.  I am preop, having surgery next week, and I can't remember the last time I ate Doritos, maybe 14 months ago?  I guess I was just astounded that someone would go through all of this to lose weight and then choose such a bad choice for a snack.  I am a carb addict and I know for ME and a lot of other people that one bag of Doritos would lead to craving more crappy carbs.  If you can eat one bag and not have problems, more power to you.

Carbs are carbs are carbs.  All carbs (except for the itols) break down into glucose.  Different types of carbs break down at different rates (see glycemic index), but in the long run they all have the same amount of calories.  A better choice is a carb that has fiber.  You can actually take the number of total carbs and subtract the fiber grams and count that as net carbs.  Anyone with a weight problem really would benefit from staying away from refined carbs (like chips) and sticking to complex carbs with fiber.
There are also good fats and not so good fats, too.  You want to avoid anything that beings with the word 'hydrogenated' because that is the really bad fat.  Probably not a concerned with baked chips.

Here's a good primer on the different types of carbs--

I was just like you pre-op...swore up and down that I would NEVER have __(you name it)____...and then after the weeks and weeks of eating barely anything, and making a ton of positive changes, I do not think having a few baked Doritos is the end of the world and not necessarily "such a bad choice."  Heck, the woman I met with for my psych eval. pre-surgery had also had the surgery, and she has a handful of chocolate chips once every couple of weeks. To me, no food should be forbidden, as that will just make me want it more. You have to live your life, at least that is my opinion.

Also, everyone's plan is different, and the one that I have allows all foods. For me, as long as you are making healthy choices 90% of the time, you have to be able to let yourself off the hook a little bit.

You are right.  Geez, I HATE it that I come off harsh on so many of my posts.  I am just a blunt person and it translates poorly on messageboards.  I am sorry that the OP feels beat up on---that wasn't my intention.  Last week someone had started a post about eating a pizza right after surgery---and it was a joke.  I really didn't know if this was a joke.  I do hope the links I posted about the different types of carbs will help her and others who need a little info on nutrition.  I know resources like that have helped me tremendously.
