O.K. Here goes a stupid question about catheters.  Will they insert a catheter before or during surgery?  Anybody know??  Thanks.........Holly  (Surgery this Wednesday)

They do it right after you fall asleep from the anaesthesia. You can't feel it and barely know its there. Good luck!!

Mine was inserted after I was asleep. I never felt it until it was time to come out - even when I was walking, never felt it.

They are put in once you are already asleep.  Many times they are also removed before you get out of recovery (mine was), but sometimes they leave them in for a while.  My surgeon has them removed early becvause she wants you up walking as much as possible and having to go to the bathroom forces you to get up.

You don't drown by falling in the water. You drown by staying there.

Good luck to you and you'll be fine. The catheter is nothing!

Ask your surgeon if a catheter is mandatory. If your surgery will be fairly short, you might not need it, and a full bladder is a wonderful incentive to get up moving soon after surgery. If it's part of his routine, most women especially tolerate it well.

They put mine in after I was asleep, and it was a good thing, too.  Even after they took it out my bladder still wouldn't wake up-I felt like I had to pee but nothing came out. They almost put it back in but things started working after sitting on the pot with my hand under ho****er for 20 minutes.   Also, completely off topic, but look at the drug store and see if they have something called Biotene or Oasis-by the mouth wash.  I couldn't have anything to drink from 4 am until midnight, but they did let me have those drops and they were a life saver with the dry mouth.  You don't swallow, it just absorbs, and causes you to create saliva.  You can ask your doc before surgery.

Good luck!!
