When you first wake up from RNY...Is the pain that horrible?

I know its weird coming from a girl with 7 tattoos and previous piercings... but getting cut up on the inside is surely a different kind of pain; and I've never ever had a surgery before!

For all you postop-ers; can you (kinda) describe the pain? Is it tolerable? :/

I'm scared of being in terrible mind warping pain when I wake up from anesthesia... even scared of not waking up at all; leaving my doggie an orphan.
...So afraid, that I was FREAKING OUT last night. Second guessing it all.

Yikes!

Anyone have any advice? I don't want to be in disgusting satanic pain. :(

I'm a little scared here. ...Geez, I hate feeling vulnerable.

I am not going to sugar coat it for you...Ive had gall baldder surgery, a complete hystorectomy, a tubaligation, natural child birth, a hernia repair and an ovary removed (pre hysto)...and this was one of the most painful surgeries out of all of those...even the open surgeries. I woke up SO thirty, and only allowed  a few chips of ice every 15 min...i HURT like a mofo...I was taking so much pain killer on top of ani nausea that I couldtn stay awake more than a few min's at a time. Im not trying to scare you, but it was one of the hardest surgeries ive had to date, much harder than I expected. Now others have had very little pain with it, evne gone back to work a week later. Not me, i was out 5 wks adn honestly couldve used a 6th week off. My best advice, prepare for the worst, and maybe youll luck out and it wont be so bad for you. But even with all this, id do it again tomorrow. Pain doesnt last...and in the end its worth it, trust me.

I woke up feeling great... The pain started about 6 hours later. Nothing helped it and I moaned and cried an begged for help all night.

About 8 hours into that, a nurse switched me from morphine to Lortab (liquid Vicodin).....

It covered my pain like a warm blanket and everything has been amazing since!

I've had 4 tattoos, 13 piercings, 3 c-sections, and a kidney stone before my RNY. The kidney stone hurt more without question! I had a hard time waking up after surgery. I pushed my pain pump every 6 minutes. I have a VERY detailed story of my hospital stay on the Obesity Help blog entry I wrote if you want to click my picture and read it.

I'm 6 weeks out now and feeling fantastic!!!

I had some pain, but not much. I did use painkillers but only for a couple of days after I got home. The quicker you can get up and walking the better you feel.

I've had hysterectomy, c-section, several laps for adhesions, gallbladder and this. THIS was by far the easiest for me.

No internal pain at all. It was all from the incisions, tubes and gas. You will have pain killers. Just make sure they are giving them to you a little before they wear off. Bring your own gas-x dissolvable strips with you!

Your abdominal muscles do feel like you've been punched a dozen times, but other than that you'll be up and walking within 4 hours after waking up. Make sure to get your pain meds before you get up to walk and before you get up to use the bathroom.

I've had two c-sections and this was the easiest surgery. I woke up with little to no pain! WALK as soon as you can!! It makes it easier for you!

My surgery was laproscopic. I had a PCA pump. The recovery room nurse started it immediately.  I used it as needed for the first 2 days.  Then,I no longer needed it.  Hence I did not experience any pain.

Its important to stay on top of any discomfort before it gets out of control.

It hurts but is bearable with the pain meds.  I was on Lortab (liquid) and it managed the pain quite well.  I have had several surgeries and knew what to expect.  Anyone not having previous surgeries may feel scared because they are feeling this pain for the first time.  By the second day I was feeling pretty good.  I only took pain meds at home for 2 days.  Just keep walking, it gets the gas out of you and you feel so much better.

I had my surgery on 05/23/11 and I had a GREAT hospital stay! My nurses were wonderful. If I had pain with the pump, they brought me an extra pain shot that did the trick. I had my pain shots right before I walked the first time, (4 hrs after surgery) and I had no pain whatsoever.  I only took the Percocet for a few days after being home. I started back to work 4 days after surgery! (I work from home as a transcriptionist). I have had 7 surgeries in total and this by far was the easiest to recover from! Walking early on and several times a day does help!  Everyone is different! Just take care of yourself and if you have some pain, ask your nurse for more pain medicine!
Good Luck to You!
*PS. I too was freaking out somethin' awful the whole week before surgery!! I thinks its normal!
